Historic Urban Neighborhoods of Indianapolis (HUNI) Intern—Summer 2020
Historic Urban Neighborhoods of Indianapolis (HUNI) is an advocacy group founded by Indiana Landmarks in 1980 to support the preservation, revitalization and interests of Indianapolis’ urban historic neighborhoods. HUNI invites representatives from each of the City’s 30+ historic neighborhoods to gather quarterly to discuss significant issues and share activities. HUNI’s website (HUNIIndy.org) provides a portal to access quick links to local historic neighborhoods and city-wide or state-wide events open to the general public. An ideal candidate is passionate about local history, has some familiarity with Indianapolis and wants to assist the organization in its efforts to celebrate Indy’s Bicentennial.
Position Summary
HUNI is seeking an intern to digitize several historic neighborhood walking and biking tours in celebration of Indianapolis’ Bicentennial. These digitized tours will be posted by the intern on the HUNI website and accessible for free to all those interested. Additionally, the intern will be responsible for writing several articles highlighting individuals promoting preservation in our city. Interested candidates should apply by March 25, 2020. Internship will ideally run 10 to 12 weeks over the Summer 2020 (May thru August) depending on the intern’s availability. Start date is negotiable. It is also feasible for a qualified intern to work 20 hours per week for a duration of 20-24 weeks.
Job responsibilities
- With the assistance of HUNI’s Editorial Board and/or Indiana Landmarks staff, digitize and upload 23 existing walking and biking tours to a new HUNI website named (Tours.HUNIindy.org). Neighborhoods include: Cottage Home, Fountain Square, Fort Harrison, Garfield Park, Herron Morton Place, Holy Cross, Irvington, Lockerbie Square, New Augusta, Old Northside, Meridian Park, Old Speedway, Ransom Place, Riverside, St Joseph, Watson Park.
- Receive training from HUNI webmaster on Concrete 5 platform.
- Work with HUNI neighborhood presidents, HUNI Executive Committee and HUNI Editorial Board to identify additional historic neighborhoods with existing walking tours.
- Photograph exterior of homes or significant architecture mentioned in walking tours, as necessary.
- Create a plan with Project Director to promote existence of digitized tours to community at large as well as to pertinent organizations (such as Indianapolis Marion County Public Library, POLIS Center, Indiana Historical Society, Indiana Landmarks, Historic Indianapolis website, Urban Times) and on social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram).
- Write “People in Preservation” articles for HUNI website profiling individuals promoting preservation within Indianapolis community.
- Add National Register and/or IHPC Preservation Plan links to HUNI website under corresponding historic neighborhood
- Suggest additional links and/or content for HUNI website, as appropriate.

- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Ability to work independently
- Access to laptop computer
Competencies Preferred
- College student or graduate student
- Seeking degree in Historic Preservation, Public History, Museum Studies, or Library & Information Science/History dual degree.

Compensation
$15 per hour, free parking, mileage if travel is required.
