Flu Fun Fact #3! Our flu shot doesn’t cause the flu!
There are many different ways flu vaccines are made. The flu vaccines typically used in the healthy adult population are made using chicken embryos (hence why, if you are allergic to chicken or eggs, you need a different vaccine!). However, the flu vaccines made with chicken embryos are inactive strains of the virus. Inactive strains of the virus are essentially dead and cannot cause the actual illness, but do trigger the immune system’s B cells into developing antibodies against “the real” thing!
SO… if you became ill with the flu within days after receiving a shot, chances are you were either exposed prior to getting the shot or not yet rendered immune from the injection. Get your flu shot early so you can become immunized ASAP! Get protected- get your flu shot!
YOU MUST make an appointment!!
Tuesdays and Wednesdays starting in October we will be in Fireside, just off the Grill in the Administration Building from 9am-3pm. Please call 574-520-4343 to make an appointment!
Monday, Thursday, and Friday you may come to the Health & Wellness Center for your flu shot, please call 574-520-4343 to make an appointment!
Please fill out the two Flu Shot forms (Flu Consent and COVID affidavit) that you can find under our Forms tab (scroll all the way down) on our Health & Wellness Center website here please bring forms with you to your appointment!

Turn off the lights IU!
Turn off the lights when you leave your classroom or office! If you are the last in the building, please turn off the lights in the halls. Even if you are just stepping out of your office for a few minutes, turn off the lights and help make IU a more sustainable and environmentally friendly office. If you have a window and it’s sunny outside, don’t use a light at all and use the natural light provided!
Leaving the lights on leads to more emissions in the atmosphere which leads to climate change and abnormal weather patterns!
Keep an eye out for the Turn Off the Lights signs on light switches to help remind you to turn off the lights, and if you would like one for your classroom or office, please email hlshaffe@iu.edu.
