October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and I’d like to take the opportunity to highlight the challenges we’re facing in the age of COVID-19. By now, we’re all settling from the uncertainty that March thrust upon us. Who could have imagined last October that by the following Spring, most of our community would be working from home? To protect our human resource, we relied on the Indiana University IT infrastructure and extended campus borders right into our living rooms and home offices. As we were making that radical change, bad actors were shifting into high gear to create mischief through various cyber attacks. Nationally, some reports suggest that since mid-March, about one-quarter (26 per cent) of security professionals reported an increase in the volume, severity and/or scope of cyber attacks.
UITS has worked tirelessly to ensure a secure computing environment, but as we shifted to supporting ‘work from home’, new challenges emerged. Providing access and creating awareness for the use of security tools like Pulse Secure VPN which provides work at home employees a secure connection to the IU Network became paramount. Additionally, with more phishing and scams directed towards our user community, our reliance on technologies like the PhishMe Reporter increased as we work to provide an organized response to cybersecurity threats via email. As Zoom became a central tool for all of our work, we faced a new challenge: the “Zoombomb.” Suddenly, we needed to learn not just how to navigate the tool, but also how to use it securely to facilitate our classes and meetings without embarrassing or harassing interruptions.
Now more than ever, cybersecurity is a necessary partnership of IT Professionals and the entire campus community. Every user plays a role in protecting the IT Infrastructure and each other. In a way, the good habits and use of security tools are like a digital “mask” that we can wear to help protect each other. As we move into November, don’t hesitate to contact IT and work with us to ensure your work from home activities are accomplished as safely and securely as possible. We’ll be ready to help.

October is National Cyber Security Awareness month, an opportunity to remind everyone of the need to protect critical data and the provisions associated with the handling of such data.
Critical data requires special care and handling, especially when inappropriate handling of the information could result in:
• Criminal or civil penalties
• Identity theft or personal financial loss
• Invasion of privacy, and/or
• Unauthorized access to this type of information by an individual or many individuals
Critical data requires the very highest level of protection. The following types of data are classified as critical:
• Social security numbers
• Credit card numbers
• Debit card numbers
• Bank account or other financial account numbers
• Driver’s license numbers
• State ID card numbers
• Student loan information
• Protected health information or individually identifiable health information relating to past, present, or future conditions, provisions of health care, and payment for the provisions of health care
• Foundation donor data
• Passwords, passphrases, PIN numbers, security codes, and access codes
Indiana University has specific policies and procedures regarding the collection, storage, and transmission of critical data. The collection of such data requires approval, notification, and consent. After these conditions have been met, critical data in electronic format can only be stored on a secure file server. It cannot be stored on a desktop workstation, laptop, PDA, USB drive, flash drive, or any mobile/media device unless (a) the information is properly encrypted on the device and (b) you have received proper prior written approval confirming a critical business need to do so. You must use an approved encryption method when electronically transmitting critical data.
Paper records containing critical data must be kept in locked file cabinets/storage rooms or otherwise access controlled. Physical storage media is removed and handled by UITS in accordance with policy IT-12.

Academic Affairs seeks a faculty member to serve as Director of Online Learning starting January 4, 2021. The Director of Online Learning will coordinate the online courses and programs offered through IUOCC and OCAP. The Director serves as the liaison between the IU Office of Online Education and campus programs in developing, offering, and monitoring the online presence of IUSB academic programs. The Director will work with faculty interested in expanding their online offerings to help conceptualize and develop online courses; work with departments that are engaged in building collaborative online programs; monitor the review process for online programs; and maintain lines of communications between campus units and the Office of Online Education and OCAP.
The position is open to IUSB faculty. It will be a half time position, with one course release per regular academic semester and a summer stipend. Interested faculty should send a letter of interest to Academic Affairs along with an updated c.v. with names of three campus references.

The Office of Academic Affairs seeks a faculty member to serve as Interim Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs starting January 4, 2021.
This position is responsible for providing strategic enrollment management for IU South Bend’s efforts in recruitment, admission, registration, and retention of students. This position will oversee the Office of Admissions, Financial Aid, Registrar, and the Titan Success Center. The interim AVCAA will provide leadership and direction to the advising offices in the academic units and work to develop a more coordinated and cohesive advising system. The interim AVCAA will work with the existing strategic enrollment management (SEM) team to develop measurable goals and strategies for enrollment management that will ensure we meet our enrollment targets for new and continuing students. The interim AVCAA will work with campus deans to ensure that academic and enrollment services offices work in a coordinated manner to achieve recruitment, admissions, registration, and retention goals.
The interim AVCAA will be responsible for implementing recommendations approved by the SEM team and current interim EVCAA. Recommendations entail adopting strategies that are targeted for meeting Fall 2021 enrollment targets as well as providing leadership in adopting structural changes to the current advising system to develop more seamless and efficient procedures.
All tenured faculty, senior lecturers, and senior clinical ranks may apply. The interim AVCAA will serve for a minimum of six months, and possibly for twelve months, depending on direction from the newly hired EVCAA.
Candidates for the position should possess a deep knowledge of enrollment management issues, experiences with one or more aspects of the enrollment pipeline, and an understanding of current challenges and opportunities facing enrollment management at IU South Bend and IU generally.

Academic Affairs seeks a faculty member to serve as Director of Adult Learning Services starting January 4, 2021. The Director of Adult Learning Services will work with academic programs across campus to develop and promote programs tailored to adult students seeking higher education credentials including degree completion, skills acquisition, industry certifications, and/or retooling for the workplace. The Director of Adult Learning Services also works with Mike Mancini, Director of Continuing Education to offer programs and courses that are relevant to the needs of the local economy. The Director of Adult Learning Services will identify and work with community partners to determine educational needs of employees in all sectors of the local economy including health care, technology, business, education, non-profit, and service industries. The director will build and expand on the work already done by Mike Mancini in the Office of Continuing Education.

The Center for a Sustainable Future is having a food drive to collect food scraps to feed the compost tumblers!
Two years ago, IUSB collected 4,760 pounds of food scraps from campus and composted them to use in the garden on campus. This resulted in removing the same amount of emissions as 12.23 cars being removed – that’s equivalent to 5.29 tons of carbon dioxide avoided from being put into our atmosphere!
If you, your department, or your club would like to compost YOUR own food waste on campus, contact Holly Shaffer at hlshaffe@iu.edu at the Center for a Sustainable Future to get a bucket and a short informational session on how to properly compost.
Help prevent even more greenhouse gas emissions from entering into our atmosphere this school year and reduce our campus’s waste and environmental impact.
