The IU South Bend Faculty Senate approved the following motion:

“To address the significant learning and life challenges due to the COVID-19 virus, IU South Bend is permitting all students enrolled in undergraduate courses during Fall 2020 to receive auto-withdrawal until the last day of classes.”

Are you interested in exploring the artistic possibilities of online performance technology? If so, consider joining this coming spring’s iteration of the Electronic Music Ensemble, course number 16563.

The Electronic Music Ensemble course MUS-X 430, commonly referred to as the Audio Visual Collective (AVC) focuses on developing live audio-visual performances through technology (which has so far included patching, coding, and animation, as well as digital, analog, and traditional instrumentation). The ensemble performs, composes, and investigates works for Live Audio Visual Ensembles, which it defines as meeting the following requirements:
[1] Works involve performative media (Live)
[2] Works involve at least two media (Audio & Visual)
[3] Works involve at least two performers (Ensemble)
.

This past fall we took the ensemble online to explore the potential of using Zoom for real-time multimedia performance. Spoiler Alert: internet technology isn’t perfect. Luckily, as artists we were able to exploit the flaws for our own artistic gain and premiere four original works created by the class and performed in real-time from our remote locations. Artists and researchers around the globe have been exploring all sorts of possibilities and making art within the limitations of our current network capabilities. This has resulted in a flourishing of new research and creative practices. This coming spring, we will review these findings and look beyond Zoom to build on recent research and explore new creative pathways.

If you are looking for an extra elective credit hour, an ensemble credit, or simply want to know what is possible with real-time audio-visual performance online, join us. Did you make a collage during lockdown? Doodle comics in the back of your class notebook? Write ridiculous lists of what you hate about COVID? Make memes to send to your friends?

I’d like to invite you to submit to this year’s edition of Analecta, IU South Bend’s award-winning literary journal. We might be “literary,” but that doesn’t mean we want dense, pretentious prose: good art is just something that communicates well in a beautiful or intentional way — so, we’re looking for work that is rich, accessible, and poignant.  This year’s journal is a way to share what we’re processing with each other and with future generations. While we are open to creative work about any subject, the issue’s theme will focus on the experience of this year.

So, send us your work! Submissions will also be included for recognition in the English department’s Annual Student Writing Awards.

Here’s how to submit:

1) Look over our genre categories and find one that fits a creative piece you’ve made. You can submit:

-VISUAL ART: 3-7 images (check out these coronavirus-inspired murals for inspiration!)

-COMICS: 3-7 standalone comics, or 1 complete strip/story* (Instagram hashtag #coronacomics is full of ideas for this genre)

-1 to 3 POEMS, maximum of 6 pages (Here’s a New York Times roundup of Pandemic Poetry)

-SHORT FICTION; 1 story or up to 3 flash stories: maximum of 3,000 words* (Here’s a graphic short story published by The Guardian, and a marvelous series of short stories in the New York Times called The Decameron Project, titled after Italian author Giovanni Boccaccio’s 14th century plague novel)

-DRAMA: 1 one-act or excerpt of full-length play/screenplay (no musicals, please); maximum of 20 pages* (Dramatic Publishing has a series of one-act pandemic plays available for purchase if you’re really into this — hello theater minors!)

-NON-FICTION PROSE: 1 work of creative nonfiction, maximum of 3,000 words. (There is a lot of flexibility within this genre! Check out Sabrina Orah Mark’s story, F*** the Bread. The Bread is Over, which went viral this past May, and this Craft Capsule essay in Poets & Writers about nightmares.)

2) Once you know what you want to submit, send an email to us at iusbanalecta@gmail.com from your IUSB account on or before February 1, 2021 with “Analecta submission [insert genre]” in your header.

3) Attach a document with a header page containing your name, student ID, submission genre, and ISUB email address, (don’t include your name anywhere else on the manuscript: this is called a blind reading) and your submission. If it’s prose, please double-space. Comics may be scans or photos merged into a Word doc or PDF.

Are you interested in doing personal training?  Enroll in HSC-K218 (16981) for the spring semester in Health Sciences.  This course, Individual Physical Activity and Exercise Instruction, provides all the information you need to sit for the ACSM-CPT or NASM-CPT personal training exams.  It is offered Tuesdays/Thursdays from 10-11:15.  Students will complete online learning and come to campus in February for hands-on learning – which is needed to gain the skills to be a personal trainer.  You’ll love this course!  Any questions? Presented in partnership with the School of Social Work, Civil Rights Heritage Center, and the IU South Bend Alumni Association our conversation will feature guest artist Semaj Brown presenting her epic poem “Mother Ocean: The Making of a New Tribe.” Semaj Brown is a poet, author, dramatist, science educator, playwright and the first poet laureate of Flint, Michigan.

Following the reading of “Mother Ocean,” Brown will discuss with Otrude Moyo, professor and director of the School of Social Work, how her piece relates to power, oppression, and complicity as we wrap up our fall series. We will use breakout rooms to continue the discussion.
