IU leaders—managers of people and teams—play a critical role in delivering on IU’s mission, engaging and motivating staff, and ensuring the overall success of the IU organization. The Leading at IU Series focuses on developing these leaders, offers critical skill development, and the opportunity to network and learn from peers across the university.

The Leading at IU Series is open to all employees university-wide—at any career level—who manage staff. The series requires an approximate three-and-a-half-hour monthly time commitment from February through October of 2021. Enrollment is limited to 150 qualified participants.

About this Series

The Leading at IU Series is a nine-month virtual development series rooted in the IU Staff Competencies. These competencies serve as a roadmap for how staff can maximize their potential at IU. Each month, we will introduce a specific leadership skill or behavior, the associated IU tools and resources, and provide opportunities to apply the learning.

Through this series, participants will:

• Gain a deeper understanding of the role and responsibility of a leader at IU and how to ensure their team members feel valued, supported, and motivated to be their best.
• Build and maintain strong working relationships rooted in trust, accountability, and collaboration.
• Recognize, support, and champion the value that different perspectives and cultures bring to their team and the IU community.
• Communicate effectively to ensure understanding while effectively and equitably handling conflict.
• Continuously manage performance with clear expectations and priorities, guidance and empowerment, coaching, and feedback.
• Access and use IU manager resources that support effective leadership and engagement.

Call for Proposals for 2021 Midwest SoTL Conference. Submit a proposal for the Conference, which will be held virtually on April 9, 2021. Our conference theme is Inclusive Teaching and our keynote speaker will be Christine Harrington, author of Designing a Motivational Syllabus: Creating a Learning Path for Student Engagement. We are accepting proposals that describe empirical studies of SoTL, theoretical discussions of SoTL, descriptions of best practice of teaching, and interactive workshops on implementing best practice. Proposals are due by 5:00 pm on Monday, February 1, 2021. (There will be a later call for 5-minute Quick Hits presentations.) See flyer or the conference website for details.

UCET Spring Course Design Institute-Essentials. UCET is running this Institute to guide you through the basics of designing a high quality online course. Academic Affairs is providing a stipend of $800 for eligible full-time faculty and $500 for eligible associate faculty who complete the Institute by March 12th and attend at least one designated UCET workshop. UCET Spring Active Learning Institute – Creativity in Your Course. Creativity is strong element in the arts, but it can also apply to all other disciplines. As teachers, we actively participate in the creative process whenever we develop a new course, a new assignment, or engage with students in a new online environment. In fashioning experiences using our own inventiveness, we guide students to become creative and reflective thinkers. Join Jay VanderVeen for a series of workshops that will facilitate the creativity that can be added to your own classes. Guest speakers from our faculty will provide examples and helpful tips for implementation.
