Families of financial aid recipients who have experienced a significant loss of income during 2019 or 2020 may be able to have their eligibility for aid re-evaluated.
The Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships has an Unusual Circumstance Form (UCF) on our website that explains the process and required documentation. Select the ‘Important Forms’ box at iusb.edu.finaid and review the form under the ‘Year Specific Forms’ section.
IMPORTANT: Families with an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) of zero are already eligible for the maximum amount of aid and would not be eligible to file the UCF. The EFC is visible on the Student Aid Report (SAR) and in the email sent to you from FAFSA.
If you have not yet filed a FAFSA, for the 2020/2021 or 2021/2022 award year, we encourage you to do so.

The IU South Bend Schurz Library has a veterans book club that meets periodically throughout the academic year. We explore a wide variety of books and genres related to military themes. The book club is open to anyone on campus or in the community interested in good books, insightful conversation, and veteran’s experiences. They are stand-alone events, so you can participate in whichever are of interest.
The first meeting of the Veterans Book Club will be Thursday Sept 16 at 5:30. We will be discussing Sergeant Rex: The Unbreakable Bond Between a Marine and His Military Working Dog by Mike Dowling. This gripping true story tells the story of Mike and his military working dog Rex who were part of the Marine Corps military K9 teams sent to Iraq, the first on the front lines of combat since Vietnam. It was Rex’s job to sniff out weapons caches, suicide bombers, and IEDs. Rex was injured during his third deployment. Fortunately, he was able to be adopted by one of his handlers, Megan Leavey, after she was discharged.
The author will be joining us virtually for the discussion. We look forward to learning about the amazing training and skills required of military working dogs, and their recent uses in the U.S. military.
We plan to meet in person in the Schurz Library, Room 301 at 5:30. Zoom participation is also an option, https://iu.zoom.us/j/84755405107 . If you have questions, or would like a free copy of the book, please contact Rhonda Culbertson, (rculbert@iusb.edu) More information at: https://vetsbookclub.wordpress.com/
The veterans book club is supported by a generous gift from the Hammes family.

A change in federal law has made more students temporarily eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
Under regular SNAP rules, students enrolled at least half-time in an institution of higher education are ineligible for SNAP unless they meet one of the exemptions. However, the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021, temporarily expands SNAP eligibility to allow students who either:
Beginning January 16, 2021, students who meet one of the two criteria outlined above may receive SNAP if they meet all other financial and non-financial SNAP eligibility criteria. The new, temporary exemptions will be in effect until 30 days after the COVID-19 public health emergency is lifted
Students should contact their local SNAP offices to find out how to apply, or for other questions about their SNAP eligibility. State SNAP agencies administer the program, process applications, and determine eligibility.
