The SoTL program has been administering its grant program in current form since the 2011-2012 academic year. In this format, SoTL grants are awarded during a fall and spring funding cycle at three levels or phases. Each phase is progressive, increasing in amount of collaboration and output expected during the funding cycle. In the last 8 years, we have awarded over $300,000 in funding to IU Bloomington faculty for their SoTL work. This funding has been distributed among 59 projects and 47 unique PIs.
In an effort to support even more individuals in their SoTL work, we have revised the grant program. A fourth, exploratory, phase has been added. In this phase, novice SoTL scholars participate in a structured faculty learning community lasting the duration of an academic year. During this time, faculty participants become familiar with the SoTL work in their discipline, practice critically reviewing SoTL publications, and develop a proposal for a small-scale SoTL project. These proposals are then funded for $1,000.
In addition to the new funding phase, we have instituted one meeting per semester with PIs of open SoTL projects. During this time, individuals will have the opportunity to build community with others on campus engaged in SoTL work, as well as, receive support in areas they are finding challenging in completing their project.
Applicants for SoTL grants will find a streamlined submission process including a new proposal template and submission system. Once proposals are received, SoTL applicants will find a revised review process focused on formative feedback designed to develop scholars including a new scoring rubric.
All of this information can be found on the newly designed SoTL grant webpage. SoTL grant application packages are due Monday, November 25, 2019. (Note: We anticipate a spring funding cycle as well.) If you have questions, please contact Shannon Sipes.
