In between working on final projects and papers, I found myself searching for a light hearted, but interesting TV show to binge in my free time. So I turned to a K-drama I remembered hearing good reviews about late last year. “The Tale of the Nine Tailed” is a fantasy, rom-com story that follows the complicated life and struggles of a Gumiho (Nine Tailed Fox) and a human who falls in love and are met with multiple trials and tribulations throughout the show. The show features multiple supernatural and fantasy elements from supernatural creatures like the Gumiho to a glimpse into how the afterlife system works and the inclusion of other Korean myths . What was particularly interesting about the show was that they made the Gumiho, which is typically depicted as a female character, into a character that could be male or female. This was an interesting play on a very old legend and I felt that the show pulled it off.
Story wise, the drama has everything from sappy romance to light hearted comedy to dark tragic moments to fantastical fight scenes. The drama is filled with various twists and turns and plot twists that keep you engrossed. As the pieces of the story all come together and you get a glimpse at the big picture, the characters and storyline gain new meaning and depth. While the ending was not exactly what I expected, it did make sense because a true happy ending is not without sacrifices. Overall, “The Tale of the Nine Tailed” was a great show to watch in between working on final papers and projects. The plot was very compelling and the fantastical elements were incredibly interesting to see played out on screen. If you are looking for something fun to binge, I highly recommend this drama.
