Center for a Sustainable Future
The Center for a Sustainable Future is the best place for a student to work on IUSB’s campus—no matter what major you are pursuing. I say that because I am getting paid to work in a garden, work on Facebook and all other types of social media, go to public events, and best yet, I have never filed a piece of paper since I started! As a matter of fact, the Center tries their best to never even use paper—but that’s another conversation entirely.
Adopt-A-Box has become my biggest project at the Center and it’s been a lot of fun. The Adopt-A-Box program will ensure maintenance of the IU South Bend Unity Garden while fostering regular interest and activity. The whole purpose of this program is to get students that have no idea that IUSB even has a garden and get them as involved as possible. A member of Student Government once came up to me asking how much dirt I’ll need. I told that individual, “That’s funny because we have had this garden for years and we just need people to help maintain it.”
Another part of my job has been to work with the Sustainability and Wellness Club. As of today the club members are working on setting up a February meeting. The S&W Club is the group that is technically organizing this event and not the Center. The Club is going to present the Adopt-A-Box proposal to the SGA in a few weeks. If you are reading this and the group, club, organization, or department you are involved in is interested in participating in the Adopt-A-Box program, please email me (Mike) at mstaszew@umail.iu.edu Thank you!
