Hello, as the title suggests, I’m Mike. I’m currently a junior at IUSB, with a double major in marketing and advertising. This is actually my first year at this college—I spent the last 2 ½ years at Ivy Tech South Bend getting my Associates of Applied Science in Business Administration. I eventually would like to get my master’s degree in—I have no idea!—and I’m currently thinking about starting a non-profit organization geared toward helping South Bend in some way. That idea might change or evolve as my time at IUSB continues because I am all over the place!
This past semester, I was enrolled in 18 credit hours, took an eight week course online through the St. Joe County Library on grant writing, participated in the Neighborhood Leadership Academy, was a Board member for the River Park Neighborhood Association, a Board member for the Ivy Tech Alumni Association, and I volunteer for a non-profit organization called Gleaner Society. Oh yeah, I’m also the newest member of the Center for a Sustainable Future team!
Why sustainability? There are so many people that are extremely passionate about going green and being sustainable in this town. I saw working in this department as an excellent opportunity to network, learn, and do something I’ve never done before. As a student-worker at Ivy Tech I pushed paper, worked behind a desk, and created spreadsheet. I understand that all those things are a part of business and I know I can’t completely avoid that work, but what appealed to me so much was the idea of actually working outside in a garden…and getting paid!
My short time around Mike, Krista, and a few others has reassured me that my time spent here will be fun, rewarding, and educational. A few goals of mine are: to get my hands dirty, literally; work with the community; network; and do something substantial.
Now I’m not 100% sure what I am in store for, I mean I just recently learned the definition for sustainability! Without even knowing it I’ve practiced sustainability in the past—here is an awful picture (the only one I could find) of a classmate and myself planting flowers for the 2012 Community University Day.here will be fun, rewarding, and educational. A few goals of mine are: to get my hands dirty, literally; work with the community; network; and do something substantial.
