Kate Hevner Mueller served Indiana University from 1937 to 1969 as Dean of Women, Senior Counselor for Women, and Professor of Education. Dr. Mueller was a national pioneer for women professionals and developed the Master’s Program in College Student Personnel (Higher Education and Student Affairs) at Indiana University in the early 1950s. The Kate Hevner Mueller Senior Awards were established in 2013 to honor IU seniors who have proven leadership on campus both inside and outside of the classroom and who have improved the IU community by their presence.
This year, Indiana University has selected 28 outstanding recipients for the Kate Hevner Mueller Outstanding Senior Award. In this article, we congratulate Sarah Nance for her ability to represent Dr. Mueller’s essential goals of the university: to promote intellect, develop personality, and inspire citizenship and leadership to all students.
Sarah Nance
Sarah is graduating with a Bachelor Science in Public Affairs from the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs, with minors in Spanish and Information Systems. She has held several internships during her time at IU, like with the U.S. Department of State, where she researched various policies for the U.S. Embassy in Fiji; MTA Visions LLC, where she researched police-community relations in Norway, Russia and Guatemala; and Blazio LLC, where she researched COVID-19 testing criteria across the U.S. On campus, she was a member of the 99th Board of Aeons and she served as an Associate Justice for the IU Supreme Court. Before being selected as an Associate Justice for the IU Supreme Court, she served as a member of the Teter Student Conduct Board for two years. In addition, Sarah held two leadership positions within the O’Neill School: first a student ambassador, and then as an undergraduate programs assistant. In these roles, she met with current high school students and IU undergraduates to share the opportunities available with the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs.
Sarah recognizes that the growth and learning that took place during her time at Indiana University is owed to many members of the university community. She said: Thank you to everyone at this university who has helped me grow, learn and become the person I have today. Without your support I would not be where I am now and could not have accomplished everything I have. Special thanks to my friends, family, Professor Denvil Duncan, Professor Roger Morris, and Professor Inna Kouper for being instrumental in influencing my plans for the future.”
