Every spring as the weather turns warm, we see students struggle to stay focused on their schoolwork and become more interested in finding ways to relax and kick back. Indiana University understands the struggle, so we are always looking for opportunities to educate students about being smart and safe.
On Saturday, April 8 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. the staff from Student Legal Services and the IU Police Department will offer a program for students entitled “Am I Free To Go?”. The program will provide interested students with strategies for safe, civil, and successful interactions with law enforcement.
We hope students will join our staff to learn about the laws that govern police interactions with individuals. The program will review Fourth Amendment protections, and Student Legal Services attorneys will address issues of when it is best to remain silent. They will also give tips about how to respond if law enforcement officials approach, stop, or arrest a student.
The Division of Student Affairs appreciates that this program is a collaborative effort with the IU Police Department. We anticipate students will learn a great deal, as they are able to discuss issues directly with police officers. We hope students will take the opportunity before spring fever hits too hard, to think about their behavior and interactions so they can avoid trouble during the last half of the spring semester.
Please join us, and encourage others to attend.
