On September 19 at Maxwell Hall, IU Student Government (IUSG) partnered with IU Corps and the Office of Rural Engagement (CRE) to create art kits with Creative Arts for Veterans. Tyler Body is the service coordinator for IUSG and helped coordinate this partnership with IU Corps. In his role, he seeks out different service and philanthropic efforts on campus that want to partner with the executive and congress members of IUSG.
When speaking about volunteering within the community as IUSG, Body wants students to understand that volunteering can be an addition to your life.
“I understand everyone’s busy,” Body said. “Having fun and giving back to the community is not give or take. It’s a balance.”
IUSG, individual students, and other campus and community members worked in collaboration with the Center for Rural Engagement. They assembled art kits for veterans with aims to support veterans, service members, and military-connected populations of all ages and abilities through the arts and arts-based approaches that promote connectedness and improve mental health and well-being.
Overall, Body’s message to IU students is that volunteering is not something that is difficult.
“Volunteering can be life changing for someone else,” Body said. “That’s the mentality I go about it. An hour of your time could provide a full basket of food for families.”
If your student organization would like to get involved with volunteering, the Bloomington community offers many volunteer events that are one-time, easily accessible, and do not require continuous commitment.
