There is a new club on campus, and they need you! As of February 2025, Cancer Support Community at Indiana University (CSC @ IU) has officially launched and is now a club on campus. Led by Jill Romack, Career Services Specialist at The Media School, Jill is excited to get the club off the ground in time for next year’s annual Hoosiers Outrun Cancer 5K (HOC).
The annual Hoosiers Outrun Cancer 5K (HOC) is the largest philanthropy event put on by Cancer Support Community of Southern Indiana (CSC). CSC works to support those who have faced hopelessness and social isolation due to a cancer diagnosis. CSC provides events and resources for cancer patients within the Bloomington community who are typically referred by IU Health.
CSC @ IU will predominantly plan for HOC and to support Cancer Support Community by raising awareness. The vision of the club is that the students on the board will help with the student outreach on campus for individuals and other student groups. They will also be brainstorming ways to connect better with students. In the fall, CSC will drive interest for the HOC 5K. In the spring, there will be more general CSC events and projects to work on.
This semester, Romack is excited to get started and work with the students.
“Part of what I love about working on campus are [the] students who are passionate about causes and want to use their time in college to give back to something bigger than themselves,” Romack said. “I love the students I’ve gotten to work with so far, and I’m excited because we have a couple students who are [already] passionate about getting [CSC @ IU] off the ground.”
All IU students have an opportunity to be a part of this club and help build it from the ground up. Students will be contributing to something that will create a lasting impact on Bloomington and the IU community long after they graduate. There are leadership and committee roles at CSC @ IU for any interest and any majors in whatever capacity. Areas for impact include positions for spreading awareness, student outreach, event planning, advertising, and more. CSC @ IU provides a meaningful impact as well as instilling critical life and career skills. Romack mentioned how crucial it is for students to take away skills that can be spoken about in an interview or put on a resume.
“[Resume building] adds value for students because [these experiences are] leadership where you are gaining skills and having a good time while taking away things that will help you,” Romack said. “For people who are interested in nonprofits or how services like CSC work, I want to make sure they will get that as part of their experience.”
For students interested in getting involved in CSC @ IU, there are lots of opportunities, including leadership positions. Join through the CSC @ IU beINvolved page or reach out to Jill Romack directly (jrromack@iu.edu). There are opportunities for students to participate in leadership roles or in a more general capacity, and CSC @ IU is hoping to have their first leadership and wider group meetings by the end of this semester.
“Whatever your connection to cancer is, even if it’s just ‘cancer sucks and I want to help people,’ the passion for helping people is the most important thing,” Romack said.
