Kate Hevner Mueller served Indiana University from 1937 to 1969 as Dean of Women, Senior Counselor for Women, and Professor of Education. Dr. Mueller was a national pioneer for women professionals and developed the Master’s Program in College Student Personnel (Higher Education and Student Affairs) at Indiana University in the early 1950s. The Kate Hevner Mueller Senior Awards were established in 2013 to honor IU seniors who have proven leadership on campus both inside and outside of the classroom and who have improved the IU community by their presence.
This year, Indiana University has selected 28 outstanding recipients for the Kate Hevner Mueller Outstanding Senior Award. In this article, we congratulate Stuart Sones for his ability to represent Dr. Mueller’s essential goals of the university: to promote intellect, develop personality, and inspire citizenship and leadership to all students.
Stuart Sones
Stuart is earning a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures from the College of Arts and Sciences and Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies. He also minored in Islamic Studies, Central Eurasian Studies, and Spanish. His profound interest in music and culture has shaped his studies in Anthropology and Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures as well as his campus involvement at Indiana University. Most notably, Stuart has been an active Arabic Flagship student, serving as an ambassador, the director of their Arabic Music Club, and as a tutor for elementary to advanced students. His academic passion for studying music cross-culturally led him to work as an undergraduate research fellow with IU’s Arts and Humanities’ Platform Global Popular Music team. On campus, Stuart has been an advocate for cultural exchange, particularly through the medium of music, having performed with the Samulnori Korean Percussion Ensemble, IU’s Mariachi band, and Middle Eastern music ensembles. Stuart has also led efforts to raise awareness of global sociopolitical issues and foster cultural understanding through his activism with the Oxfam Club at IU and Students for Peace in the Middle East.
When asked to reflect on the people who supported him over his time here at Indiana University, Stuart expressed his appreciation and support for his professors and family. He said:
I would like to express my great appreciation to my professors for their unwavering support and confidence in me: to Professor Iman Alramadan for being the shining face that first drew me to studying Arabic at IU; to Professor Margaret Graves for her heartfelt encouragement and contagious passion for Islamic studies; and to Professor Jane Goodman whose stellar example and insightful direction in anthropology, performance, and North African studies have been incredibly influential in defining my academic passions and trajectories. I also want to thank my family for their boundless emotional and intellectual support throughout my time at IU.”
