Kate Hevner Mueller served Indiana University from 1937 to 1969 as Dean of Women, Senior Counselor for Women, and Professor of Education. Dr. Mueller was a national pioneer for women professionals and developed the Master’s Program in College Student Personnel (Higher Education and Student Affairs) at Indiana University in the early 1950s. The Kate Hevner Mueller Senior Awards were established in 2013 to honor IU seniors who have proven leadership on campus both inside and outside of the classroom and who have improved the IU community by their presence.
This year, Indiana University has selected 28 outstanding recipients for the Kate Hevner Mueller Outstanding Senior Award. In this article, we congratulate Dana Nissan for her ability to represent Dr. Mueller’s essential goals of the university: to promote intellect, develop personality, and inspire citizenship and leadership to all students.
Dana Nissan
Dana is earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology with a minor in Chemistry from the College of Arts and Sciences. Dana – a Hutton Honors Program scholar and research assistant in both the IU Biology Department and the Tracey Lab – co-authored a research article entitled “Mechanisms of Association of Sleep and Metabolic Syndrome” in the Journal of Medical-Clinical Research and Reviews. Outside of the classroom and laboratory, she was a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority, the Phi Delta Epsilon co-ed medical fraternity, the Hoosier Scholar Ambassadors program, and the Mentor Collective. She held leadership roles as the social media manager for U Bring Change 2 Mind and served on the student advisory board for Students United for Creating Critical and Equitable Education (SUCCEED). In the Bloomington community, Dana was recognized as the Volunteer of the Year in 2019 with the Boys and Girls Club of Bloomington.
Dana is completely humbled to be recognized as a Mueller Award recipient with so many other exceptional peers. When asked to reflect on this accomplishment, she said: “I am humbled by such an honor and would like to thank Jordan Hendershot for the nomination and Dr. Porter and Dr. Bunner for their support. None of my accomplishments could be possible without the support this university has given me to pursue every opportunity in my path.”
