Congratulations to Tom Sweeney, one of the 2020 Stahr Award recipients. Tom is completing his Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Philosophy and a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Statistics with minors in Spanish and Psychology.
Academic Achievements
His academic interests led him to study abroad at University of Oxford and at the Universidad de Alcalá de Henares in Spain as well as serve as a research intern with the Federal Reserve Board of Governors for summers in 2018 and in 2019. During his time as a research intern for the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, he co-authored and designed mathematical method for interpolation, extrapolation and indexing of key time series. He is a Herman B Wells Scholar, a King Scholar and a Moffat Economics Scholar. In addition, Tom is a Marshall Scholar which includes tuition and stipend for two years of graduate studies in the UK.
Campus and Community Involvement
Tom was highly involved on campus as a student leader holding many different leadership roles in student organizations. He was the Culture of Care President, the Student Body Treasurer of IU Student Government, the Co-Founder of the LGBTQ+ Mentorship Program and a columnist for the Indiana Daily Student. He was also selected as travel competitor with the IU Model United Nations.
Acknowledgements
Tom had a very supportive community around him of friends, classmates, professors and family. When reflecting on this supportive community, he said, “I really appreciate all the support that my friends, classmates, professors, instructors, and family have given me. I want to give a special shout out to the many wonderful IU staff members who have brought me so far. These individuals deserve the real recognition.”
