Congratulations to Isabel Mishkin, one of the 2020 Stahr Award recipients. Isabel is completing her Bachelor of Science degree from the Paul H. O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs with a degree in Healthcare Management and Policy with a minor in Public Health and Public Management.
Academic Achievements
While her involvement here on campus and the community was extensive, Isabel also spent a summer abroad in Greece where she focused her research on democratic institutions and has held an internship with MedStar Health where she focuses her efforts on emergency preparedness specifically researching healthcare coalition best practices for sustainability, longevity and interoperability.
Campus and Community Involvement
Isabel has been a part of the IU Student Government for three years in different roles; starting as the Chief of Health and Wellbeing policy, then Chief of Staff, and now Student Body President. During her three years, she has worked on student issues related to mental and physical health, sexual misconduct, electric scooter safety, voter engagement, food insecurity, and more. In her many roles, she has empowered students to feel like their concerns are valid and valued while uniting the student community. As Student Body President, one of the most important things to her was empowering women to take on leadership roles. She has also been involved as a Co-Founder of the Student Wellness Alliance, President of the National Alliance of Mental Illness on Campus, and a member of Crimson CORPS where she served as a peer advocate and educator. She was an intern at Erika’s Lighthouse and American Red Cross in Bloomington and a volunteer for the Banneker After School Program at Fairview Elementary.
When reflecting on the many mentors and friends that encouraged her during her journey here at IU, she said, “To the friends and mentors who encouraged me to dream bigger and do better- thank you! I’m grateful for the late-night texts and unscheduled advising, shoulder-leaning and hand-holding, and all of the support in-between. You are my village. Thank you!”
