The Student Legal Services office has relocated to room 712 of the IU Bloomington Poplars Building on 400 E. 7th Street. The office opened in its new location on Monday, February 4th.
Student Legal Services director Stacee Williams said she is excited that all of the offices will be together on one floor rather than spread over separate levels.
“The layout of the office will be good for clients and workers both,” Williams said.
The new Student Legal Services location is two blocks from its former location across the street from Dunn Meadow.
Student Legal Services will continue to provide the same services to IU students in its new location. All services are still free, and students can visit as often as they need. Fees are included with student tuition.
Student Legal Services focuses its resources on helping students handle common legal processes or challenges such as housing issues, car accidents, name/gender changes, and immigration. They represent students in court for civil cases, if needed.
“For example, we’ll have international students come in who got into a wreck and aren’t familiar with the system,” Williams said. “That kind of thing happens every single day.”
She said immigration and naturalization services have been particularly high in demand lately, so they are expanding their office to accommodate students’ needs.
Consultations with a private lawyer can cost up to $250 an hour. Student Legal Services is cost-free besides the $8.80 fee paid with tuition. All awards from cases go back to students.
In the calendar year 2018, Student Legal Services was able to save students over $500,000, Williams said.
