With Starbucks as with life, it’s great to try new things. At the IMU Coffeeshop series, there’s a new activity for everyone each Thursday at 8 pm at the IMU Coffeeshop. Week one is Geek Night, week two is Global Music Night, week 3 is Story Slam, and week 4 is Jazz Jam. At the IMU Coffeeshop series, the IU community is invited to sit back and enjoy themselves
Geek Night brings together a panel of professors and experts to discuss modern pop culture topics. Geek Night is for everyone with a passion they just want to know more about, not just the self-proclaimed geek. The previous month’s theme was “Women in Hip-Hop.”
Global Music Night is a time for musicians of all backgrounds to perform for a diverse audience. It’s a time for us to recognize and celebrate the diverse cultures of students.
Story Slam is an event like no other at IU. Modeled after The Moth podcast series, it’s an open-mic event for participants to speak about their everyday stories and experiences. Students are encouraged to be candid and animated, like an actual storyteller.
Jazz Jam is a night for jazz combos from Jacobs School of Music to perform for the pleasure of coffee-drinkers. Its live music for students to study along with and enjoy.
Two of theses events are put on by the IU Arts and Humanities Council: Geek Night and Story Slam. The council created these events so that participants could get involved with the action, giving them a fun opportunity to step outside of their comfort zone.
One reason students choose not to get involved in such events is a fear it will cut into time to study or relax. But this activity comes to you. Just order Starbucks and grab a book as the entertainment goes on in front of you. You only need to come to Starbucks.
The IMU Coffeeshop Series is not only about cultural immersion, but treating yourself. As of this year, the IMU accepts iBucks at most of its venues, including Starbucks. The deal lasts most of the day, besides the 11 am-1:30 pm lunch hour.
Stop by this Thursday for Story Slam, an interactive storytelling experience. We’re looking forward to coffee.
