Before you sign your next lease, see Student Legal Services
Moving into a new apartment or rented home is exciting, but it can also present challenges. One of the most important parts of selecting your new place to live is signing the lease. Leases can be complicated and tricky to understand. IU students have access to a free resource right here on campus that can help students to better understand the contents of their lease.
The Student Legal Services department at Indiana University is a team of four full-time attorneys who supervise students from IU’s Maurer School of Law. Students are invited to bring their leases to the SLS department to be reviewed. By using this service, students can be certain that they understand all of the elements of their lease before it’s time to sign.
In addition, if students have issues with their landlord or living situation once they’ve moved into the apartment or house, the SLS team can help. If students are dealing with substandard living conditions, neglected maintenance issues, or trouble getting their security deposit back, the SLS department can help to explain the situation and advocate for the student.
Best of all, the services provided by the Student Legal Services department at IU are funded by the IU student activity fee and are otherwise free for all students who have paid the fee. Typically, the only out-of-pocket expenses for students are court filing fees.
