The fraternity and sorority community at Indiana University is the largest it has ever been in its 172 year history. Today, there are 75 chapters with over 8,000 undergraduate members. Each year over 3,400 members choose to live on-campus in fraternity and sorority housing. The Bloomington campus hosts 38 chapter houses. Each house is located on the perimeter of campus and is home to between 65 and 130 members.
Fraternity and sorority chapter houses are different from residence halls. Like a residence hall, chapter houses are approved campus housing. Unlike a residence hall, chapter houses are not owned by the University.
Fraternity and sorority chapter houses are privately owned residences managed by each fraternity’s or sorority’s alumni corporation boards. All housing contracts and issues are handled by the alumni boards and vary by chapter.
For details related to chapter specific move-in/move-out dates, room and board charges, dues (local, council, and national), liability insurance, building/capital improvement fund charges, programming fees, laundry, technology and cable fees, invoicing, and security/damage deposits, check with the chapter president, chapter advisor, alumni corporation board president, house director/live-in advisor, or chapter accountant.
As approved campus housing, fraternity and sorority chapter houses are subject to oversight by the Indiana University Board of Trustees and University regulations such as annual fire safety and kitchen inspections.
Beginning in Fall 2017, Indiana University is requiring all housed chapters to employ a professional resident live-in advisor or house director. Sororities have always employed full-time live-in house directors, but this requirement is new to the 19 fraternities on campus. Three fraternities will employ full-time live-in house directors and the other 16 plan to hire IU graduate students as live-in advisors for Fall 2017.
Student Life and Learning (SLL) supports the IU Fraternity and Sorority community. The SLL Greek Team Staff provides workshops and roundtable discussions for the alumni advisors. SLL regularly communicates with house directors/live-in advisors and alumni volunteers who serve on chapter Corporation Boards and Advisory Boards. Each month, chapter presidents meet with their assigned SLL staff coach to discuss the goals and activities of the fraternity and sorority community.
Student Life and Learning is a department of the Division of Student Affairs.
