PT Solutions pioneers collaboration with IU physical therapy program via corporate philanthropy

PT Solutions is extending its people-centered approach to support the local physical therapy community through a gift to the School of Health & Human Sciences (SHHS) at IU Indianapolis.

Driven by a desire to grow services for students, practitioners, and patients, PT Solutions (PTS) committed nearly $277,500 to IU’s physical therapy (PT) students and program over the next three years. The gift will establish the PT Solutions Student Success Fund with the IU Foundation to incentivize top students to choose IU, as well as provide additional funding for students who commit to working with PTS post-graduation.

“This collaboration contributes to health–care workforce expansion in Indiana, addressing regional shortages, and subsequently ensuring ample job opportunities for our graduates,” said Rafael Bahamonde, founding SHHS dean. “This gift and grant will foster a mutually beneficial ecosystem for education, workforce development, and employment stability.”

The funds also help address the rising costs of education and the simultaneous growing need for health–care providers and physical therapists in Indiana, he added.

Becoming a physician has always been the end goal for Katherine Gonzalez, a third-year health sciences student at the School of Health & Human Sciences (SHHS).

As an honors college student, 21st Century Scholar, member of the pre-medicine club, and member of the Latino Medical Student Association, Gonzalez knows what she needs to do to set herself apart when it comes time to apply to medical school. This smart, hard-working student hasn’t always had the confidence and savvy to navigate the college landscape. However, she did have the wisdom to seek guidance and the openness to trust others.

Event addresses growing need for serious illness and supportive care and marks launch of new minor

Greg and Denise Venable celebrate their daughter’s wedding 17 years after his life-changing aortic dissection and stroke.

 

Seventeen years ago, Greg and Denise Venable celebrated their fourth anniversary on a February Thursday night. Happy and carefree, they couldn’t foresee how much their lives were about to change.

Within 24 hours, one foot of then 45-year-old Greg’s ascending and descending aorta dissected. Twenty-two hours of surgery over two consecutive days ensued. Doctors, in deliberate tones, shared mortality rates with Denise; others presented papers for Denise to sign. An unwilling participant, she found herself thrust into the scary world of serious illness and supportive care.

Multiple teams of doctors and nurses repaired Greg’s aorta and identified and stopped an elusive bleed under his heart. During surgery, Greg also suffered a significant stroke—the perfect storm resulting in long-term illness and support needs for the Venable family. (more…)

Amber Comer accepts position with American Medical Association (AMA)

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Amber Comer, Ph.D., J.D., has taken on the significant role of director of ethics policy and secretary of the council on ethical and judicial affairs at the American Medical Association (AMA).

In her new position, Comer is responsible for overseeing all policy-related activities concerning ethics within the AMA and its council on ethical and judicial affairs. Specifically, she will oversee managing the development and periodic updates of ethics guidance within the AMA Code of Medical Ethics, which serves as the official policy stance of the AMA on matters of ethical significance in the realms of medicine and healthcare.
