In response to a very difficult election here in the U. S., Chancellor Terry Allison released this message to the campus on Wednesday, November 9th:
The difficult and contentious presidential election is over and today we are collectively absorbing the result. Many are angry or saddened because their dignity has been threatened during a harsh campaign and frightened about what the future may bring. Others are buoyed because they feel their views and voices have been heard and are optimistic about the results. Once again, we have had one candidate win the plurality of popular votes while another has won the Electoral College, causing great frustration for many.
I want to assure you that the enduring values of IU South Bend remain intact. Our first obligation is to truth and rigorous inquiry. This was the case before and during the campaign and remains the center of our purpose. Our campus welcomes all who want to learn, teach, and serve within a diverse community.
The IU South Bend “Vision Statement” spells out clearly our aspirations:
By 2020, Indiana University South Bend will be recognized as a premier regional, comprehensive master’s institution that is committed to exceptional teaching and scholarship, strong curricula and programs, and that values inquiry, creativity, and innovation at all levels. We will be a diverse, caring, and student-centered campus with a culture that inspires community engagement, good citizenship, and effective leadership.
In my time here as chancellor, I have seen continuing evidence that our campus provides a safe and supportive place for diverse views and backgrounds where differences can be explored thoughtfully and with respect. Today and in the days ahead we will respond in healthy and productive dialogue about what people are feeling, thinking, and planning during a time of transition and uncertainty. I know that IU South Bend students, faculty, and staff will remain leaders for our region by advancing our inclusive values and inspiring vision.
