Madison Kuziela, a soon-to-be graduate from our Bachelor of Science in Health Services Management program, has fully embraced the hands-on learning opportunities offered at the Fairbanks School of Public Health. Originally from Chicago, she is set to graduate in December 2024 and has spent her final semester interning at Hoosier Village Retirement Community in Zionsville, Indiana.
Madison discovered her internship through a career outing at Hoosier Village and through recommendations from past interns. She describes her role as deeply engaging, highlighting her responsibilities that range from conducting resident assessments and planning activities to interacting with residents one-on-one.
“I spend my time coming up with games to play, crafts to make, things to bake, and planning outings for the residents,” she explains. “I even go to residents’ rooms to do manicures, interact with their family members, and collaborate with aides and certified nursing assistants when needed.”
For Madison, the best part of the internship is the daily interaction with residents.
“Every day is so different, and you never know what each resident is going through, so being able to put a smile on their face or help them with a task is super rewarding,” she shares.
Her time at Hoosier Village has solidified her career aspirations. She now envisions a future in health care administration within the long-term care sector and aims to enter an Administrator-in-Training (AIT) program after earning her Master’s in Health Administration (MHA).
“Having the opportunity to shadow other professionals has shown me firsthand that long-term care is where I want to make an impact,” she says.
Madison offers valuable advice to prospective students and current HSM majors: “Don’t limit yourself to one type of health care setting. Try to get exposure to different areas to see what you like and don’t like. Look for internships as soon as possible—the earlier you start, the more options you’ll have. Even volunteer experiences can be helpful. Building connections with professors, classmates, and professionals is key. Take advantage of career outings and other networking opportunities.”
Her journey demonstrates the breadth of experiences and the potential career paths available through the Health Services Management program. Madison’s story is a testament to the impact our students can have in health care and the opportunities that await those ready to pursue their passions.
