When Sandeep Samra began her undergraduate studies at Indiana University Indianapolis, she was drawn to the world of healthcare, initially imagining herself in a clinical role, providing bedside care. However, as she completed various internships, she discovered a deeper passion for the work happening behind the scenes—the strategies and decisions that directly impact patient care.
This realization led her to pursue a Master of Health Administration (MHA) at the Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health, where she found her calling in healthcare leadership.
During her graduate studies, Sandeep completed a part-time internship with the Franciscan Physician Network. This experience opened doors and helped her secure a role as a process improvement analyst at IU Health. Her dedication and talent quickly became evident, and after three years, she was promoted to consultant. By 2020, Sandeep advanced to her current position as a program manager of patient experience for IU Health Physicians.
In this role, she drives strategies, completes projects, and analyzes data, all while working to enhance the patient experience across the organization. For Sandeep, no two days are alike—some are filled with meetings, while others involve hands-on project management and strategy development.
Reflecting on her career, Sandeep emphasizes the importance of flexibility and openness to new opportunities.
“It’s okay to try new things and not stick to what you originally thought was best for you,” she says. “Opportunities open at any time, and by networking with new people, you might find something that brings you so much joy and engagement that it doesn’t even feel like work.”
This openness to growth and connection was a lesson she learned at the Fairbanks School of Public Health, where networking and meeting people “where they are” became essential skills for her.
Since graduating, Sandeep has experienced significant milestones, both professionally and personally. She is a proud mother of two beautiful daughters and balances her role as a full-time mother with working remotely—a unique advantage that came about during the pandemic. Sandeep’s passion for patient experience remains strong, and she is determined to expand the strategy she leads to a statewide level for IU Health Physicians.
Looking back, one of her favorite memories from her time at IU Indianapolis was getting accepted into the MHA program and meeting amazing individuals who remain part of her professional network.
“Seeing their growth and advancement in their careers is exciting,” she shares, grateful for the connections that have endured beyond graduation.
Sandeep Samra’s experience shows that while healthcare offers many paths, sometimes the most fulfilling one is found when you look beyond the obvious. Her adventure is an inspiring example for anyone considering a career in health administration and leadership, illustrating the powerful impact of combining passion with strategy and community.
