Sam Snider began working at Medxcel Facilities Management, as a marketing intern in May 2019, before transitioning to a part-time position as a customer engagement consultant. Medxcel is a national healthcare management organization that provides the administrative infrastructure to allow its clients to focus on patient care.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Snider’s role included conducting surveys with clients to monitor how Medxcel’s services are received.
“Once I receive the responses, I give feedback to each of our hospital’s leaders on how service can be improved,” Snider said. “But, due to COVID-19, we halted all of those surveys because we want to be respectful of caregivers who are extremely busy right now.”
Snider now “monitors how clients and associates are interacting with the news sites and articles that Medxcel sends out regarding how hospitals can transform their physical environment to keep people socially distanced and safe.”
He credits his training in the Health Services Management (HSM) Program as one of the reasons he was able to transition from an intern to an employee.
“The program is successful because it gives a good base knowledge of healthcare services management through courses focusing on science, finance, and marketing. I was able to draw information from those courses and apply it to my experience at Medxcel.”
Snider encourages other Fairbanks School of Public Health students to put themselves out there and apply themselves to their classes, including making connections with their teachers as much as they can.
“The Fairbanks faculty have always been willing to provide advice and feedback whenever I needed anything, especially Sarah Johnson, the head of HSM. Faculty are the ones who have invested in my professional growth. I encourage all students to build those relationships to get the most out of their degree.”
