We asked our student ambassadors to tell us how they’ve been spending their summer and what new perspectives they have gained as they prepare for the fall semester.
Kate Colpetzer, Epidemiology student
My summer so far has been very fun! Currently, I am working on my internship and have just begun my summer class, which is a math course. Many of you may not know but I struggle in math a lot.
I used to be up late at night frustrated to the point of tears trying to solve my homework. Well, let’s just say, things are not too dissimilar now 🙂 However, I have gained a new perspective that I did not have back then. It is okay to not know! I always felt a lot of shame when I didn’t know the answer to a question. Now, I know that I cannot let myself struggle in silence. Now, I have an amazing tutor who helps me understand the concepts and why they are important, something that has always been a challenge for me.
I also will be utilizing the Math Assistance Center on campus when I come across an issue when I am not being tutored. There are so many resources out there to help you succeed! All you have to do is find the courage to ask! If you are like me, even if it is in another subject besides math, know that the first step to success is to remind yourself that it is okay to take the steps YOU need to learn the material.
This mindset is helping me prepare for this upcoming fall semester, where I have three math-based courses. Not only am I jogging my math memory, but I am also participating in behaviors that set me up for success! I know all of us Summer Session 2 friends are going to do great! Good luck to you all!

Hey everyone!
I wanted to give a rundown what my summer has looked like as a student at IUPUI. I have summer classes, my internship, and am working at Aldi.
My summer classes are divided between the two summer sessions, which makes it easier for me to manage. I started my internship as an administrative assistant for Our Kids Our Community during the spring semester of my sophomore year. I have been able to create invaluable connections with professionals in the public health field.
This summer has taught me that I can handle a full load if I am organized. It is important to me that I stay involved and continue learning and developing. One thing I personally need to work on is communication. I can fall behind on emails, which can cause me to be behind on information and updates. What have you all been learning about yourselves this summer?
Lucy Khatib, Epidemiology student
This summer I have prioritized getting in the right mindset for this upcoming school year at Indiana University Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health. So far I have been having an insightful internship with Indiana University Health to help develop an understanding of the United States health care system.
I have also started an online summer class to get a head start for the fall. Personally, this last semester was rocky, which is why I am empowered to start the fall on the right foot. Having these opportunities with the physician has allowed me to rekindle my passion and focus on why my studies are important.
I have also spent summer kayaking on the White River on the hot summer days! For those looking for enriching ways to continue your education during the summer, I would recommend an internship or volunteer opportunities!

This is my final summer as a college student and it has been flying by! I have been staying busy between interning on the Patient and Family Engagement team at IU Health focusing on the voice of customers and reading new books.
It has been so much fun but gone so fast and I know that the fall semester at IUPUI is right around the corner. I have been going to the gym and slowing down in preparation for my final season as a college athlete and final year of graduate school.
Slowing down is a conscious choice and it is something that I have prioritized this summer by doing less, appreciating more, and being present. Life moves at such a fast pace that it seems to pass us by before we have time to really enjoy it – and I want to enjoy the small part of my college career that I have left.
It’s not always an easy choice to make to slow down, but I have never been happier! I hope you too slow down and appreciate where you are right now in this crazy, fast-paced, and unbelievably beautiful life.
