We asked our student ambassadors to share one thing they couldn’t live without in their student experience.
Kate Colpetzer, Epidemiology student
Today I wanted to talk about one thing that I could not live without as a student. For me, it is a good backpack! I just recently purchased a new one and I already am noticing a significant difference in the way that I carry myself.
For one, my back doesn’t hurt as much. As a student, you carry a number of things that really can add up in weight. Having a backpack with good support can help reduce the strain put on your body.
For the past two years, I also did not have a backpack with a laptop sleeve. Now that I do, there is so much more room in my main compartments since I don’t have my laptop and tablet taking up space. And lastly, I also value a bag that has plenty of pockets for storing the little things. I went with a Jansport Main Campus FX.
Here is a tip: I signed up with my IU email and got a 20% discount for being a student! So if you need a new bag, you know where to look.

Today I wanted to share one skill I have learned that has created much success in both my personal and academic life. As many of you know, juggling school and work life balance can be overwhelming at times. One key to being successful is making mental health a priority. This can be done through many ways. I’d like to share some tips that helped me maintain a healthy mindset when life gets stressful.
One tip is to organize and keep a schedule. I typically use my Notes app and Calendar app to keep track of assignments, meetings, to-do lists, etc. Another tip is to set aside time for you to destress and do something that you know brings peace. This could be taking time out to garden or hang out with your favorite person 😉.
My last tip I’d like to share is, be kind to yourself! College is not an easy task. Use your resources and be patient with yourself. Create reachable goals and reward yourself for completing those. I hope that others will also take time out to make their mental health a priority. Thank you for taking the time to read my post and I hope to see you soon!

Today I wanted to share a tool I can’t live without! I use an app and website called Notion daily. It is a free resource that can be used for any scheduling or writing imaginable.
The custom interface lets the user have a full range of options. I have my syllabuses, homework and to-do lists on Notion. It also allows for integration from Google Calendar and Drive. I would give this a shot if you wanted to try an online calendar or a to-do list for the upcoming semester!

The one thing that I cannot live without as a graduate student is a to-do list! To-do lists create order and accountability as well as help me relieve stress. It allows me to prioritize tasks and efficiently use my time.
Life is crazy! It can be easy to forget to send that follow-up email or a homework assignment. To-do lists give me structure and a plan that I can stick to as well. It is easier to remember what you need to do versus what you have done, so to-do lists offer proof of what you have accomplished that day, week, or month.
Planning for the future can positively impact goal management and I have found the easiest way to do that is through a piece of notebook paper and a pen for me. Subtracting from your list of priorities is as important as adding to it! Consider making a to-do list today.
