Paul H. O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs Assistant Professor Alberto Ortega has been named an Emerging Poverty Scholars Fellow by the Institute for Research on Poverty.
The Emerging Poverty Scholars Fellowship provides exceptional junior scholars from underrepresented racial and ethnic populations with flexible funding over a two-year award period. Ortega’s research focuses on public policies, institutions, and socioeconomic factors that affect under-served communities.
“The guidance, mentorship, and support provided by this fellowship are invaluable,” Ortega said. “This fellowship allows me the time to contribute research that improves the lives of low-income and marginalized individuals. The Emerging Poverty Scholars Fellowship also helps introduce my work to a broader interdisciplinary audience.
“The validation from this fellowship encourages me to continue pursuing research that helps underserved communities. Receiving this honor means I must continue to pay it forward and encourage future social policy scholars.”
Ortega plans to use the fellowship to extend his recent research agenda by examining the effects of segregation and victimization on health and well-being.
