McKenna Bowley, Sophomore, tells us about her study abroad experience in London.
What attracted you to the program?
The program interested me particularly because of the class offered. National Security is a specific passion of mine. The fact that it was abroad was more of a blessing. I knew London was a beautiful city, and I knew that the professor who taught it was amazing!
What is your favorite memory, story, or experience you had while participating in the program?
I cannot specifically limit it down to one favorite memory or story. I had so much exploring with my roommates and class. Every single day was a new adventure! I got to experience a vast number of new foods, places, and history. It is truly remarkable to be at Westminster Abbey one day and Stonehenge the next.
What advice would you give students who are hesitant about studying abroad or participating in the program?
Do it! The biggest regret of most college alumni is not studying abroad. Do not be apart of that majority! One day, you will not be in college anymore and you will wish you were this young visiting the Big Ben and riding double decker busses.
How has studying abroad, or the program in general, benefitted you as a person?
I think the program and studying abroad brought me independence and freedom. I had to make decisions on my own to make it to London and back. I did not have my family to travel with me. When abroad, your only focus is class and what you are going to do later. There is some sort of freedom from not having to worry about all the stresses you have back home. It is truly refreshing. I remember crying coming home because I wanted to stay forever.
Anything else you’d like to add?
If you are worried about financial needs, a lot of study abroad scholarships out there go unclaimed. Do not let that stop you from your education, especially abroad.
