Name: Shamima Ferdous
Graduation Year: 2022
Post-Graduation Career: Supply Chain Manager at Amazon
Q: Where were you before the MSHM program?
A: Before MSHM, I worked as a supply chain professional for different multinational companies. Coming to the program, I had the opportunity to bring my passion for supply chain management to my practicum site and more! I worked as a Face Covering Project Fellow in Service to the Armed Forces (SAF) at the American Red Cross, Indiana region. I supervised a project of procuring and distributing 200,000 face-covering masks across Red Cross hospitals in the US and led a team of 400 volunteers.
I used the business foundation class a lot during my practicum. Mostly the quantitative analysis class, which helped enhance my data analytics skills and deepen my knowledge of risk analysis. I could align my quant class learning experiences with my hands-on experience in spend analysis which helped me save $16000 out of the allocated budget for my project at the American Red Cross. I also used my Lean six sigma training from my operations management class for process improvement at my practicum site, and I am planning to start my lean six sigma certification post-graduation.
Q: Did you feel supported by the MSHM faculty?
A: Given my experiences and the support from my preceptor and program, I have successfully landed a job as a supply chain manager for Amazon! My preceptor Jeffrey Imel, always supported me thought-out my practicum and appreciated my hard work; he was always there for me whenever I had any questions or needed help. My faculty, program director April Grudi and assistant director Lyndsey Swan, MS were always very supportive. Among all of their countless supports, I would like to talk about the most significant one: recently I had a terrible accident, and right now I am not able to use my one hand. As soon as April and Lyndsey heard about my accident, they helped me with my accommodations to complete my degree with a full-time job and injury. I could not ask for more!
Q: What was your favorite part of the MSHM program?
A: My favorite part of the MSHM program is the operations management class, and group study sessions with my cohort my favorite part of my practicum are mostly my 1:1 with my preceptor, where we used to brainstorm/discuss our project plans. Also, talking to Sherri A. Miller was always super fun. Even though some of my cohorts already graduated and I pushed my graduation because of my accident, we are always connected on LinkedIn and social media. I am receiving continuous support from them whenever I need it. I want to thank Natali Jouzi, RDN, and Ujunwa Adirieje (UJ), especially for helping me throughout my entire MSHM journey.
