Q: How would you describe your MSHM journey?
A: During my undergrad at IU, I was an International Studies major. Although I loved learning and researching current issues in the world, I began to feel unfulfilled because we were not learning about what could be done to solve those issues. When I realized I needed a more “hands-on” approach to solving problems, I started researching various Master’s programs. Eventually, I found the Master of Science in Healthcare Management (MSHM) program here at IU. It offered all the tools I needed to become an effective leader — through rigorous coursework, a practicum experience, and an array of certifications.
Q: Where was your practicum site?
A: I was paired with the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services (MDHHS) on their Opioid Policy team. Throughout this experience, I have met some of the most genuine and passionate experts within the healthcare field. As of now, we are working on a series of webinars about strategies on how to best invest the opioid settlement dollars throughout Michigan. It has been exciting to work alongside senior MDHHS staff, the Attorney General’s office, and other consultants.
Q: What was your favorite part of the MSHM program?
A: Although I cannot speak highly enough of the MSHM program and the support I have felt from the faculty and staff, my favorite part of the program has, without a doubt, been my cohort. Before the program, I was nervous that our cohort would be highly competitive with one another, and that we would see each other as nothing else but colleagues. However, we quickly bonded, and I now see them all as my second family. I know that I can lean on them for support during stressful times, to pick me up from the airport, or when I need a good laugh. I am so thankful for all of the memories we have created together throughout the program, and I am excited to see where everyone goes after graduation. Regardless of distance, I know we will all remain very close friends.
