Name: Gabby Nenedjian
Graduation Year: 2022
Post-Graduation Career: Operational Excellence Program Manager at IU Health
Q: How would you describe your MSHM journey?
A: Before the MSHM program, I majored in Healthcare Management and Policy and minored in Human Resource Management through the O’Neill School at IU Bloomington.
Q: Where was your practicum site?
A: Early on in the MSHM program, we were given the opportunity to interview a variety of healthcare organizations to identify our practicum site. I worked with Chuck Russo, the Director of Transformation for the IU Health South Central Region. On his team, I had the opportunity to work on a couple of different projects that build upon the MSHM program competencies.
The first project revolves around the decommissioning of the art pieces that were hanging in the IU Health Bloomington Hospital Legacy building. I first tried to return the pieces to the original artists, many of whom are/were IU Health employees. After having quite a few photos left over, we decided to host an auction to benefit the Team Member Support Fund through the IU Health Foundation. The next steps for this project are building the auction site, making sure things go smoothly, and hosting pickup dates for bidders to retrieve their art.
Another project is focused on analyzing key performance metrics from the old IU Health Bloomington Emergency Department (ED) and the new ED after moving to the new IU Health Bloomington facility. I will be utilizing tools in Excel to identify any trends that may be in the data, and I am looking forward to seeing what contrast exists (if any) between the old and new Emergency Departments.
Q: What were some of the most influential skills you learned through the MSHM program?
A: I believe the most important skills I have learned through the MHSM program that has been essential at my practicum site are professional communication and project management tools. After taking a Franklin-Covey course revolving around Writing for Results and completing exercises for our coursework, I have learned how to write professional emails and other communications which were a little nerve-wracking when I first started my practicum. When looking at the project management tools we learned like scope statements and risk assessments/management plans, I have been able to apply all of them at my practicum site and receive coaching from my preceptor which has helped immensely with my personal growth in these skills.
Q: Did you feel supported by the MSHM faculty?
A: I have felt so supported throughout this program and the driven, hardworking nature of all the student’s shows throughout our daily interactions. Our cohort has become such a tight-knit group since beginning the MSHM program. I feel like I could ask anyone in my cohort for help with topics I don’t understand, and they would be 100% willing to assist me. I look forward to seeing the career paths that my fellow cohort members take and all the amazing things they will accomplish in the future.
