Post-Graduation Career:
Q: How would you describe your MSHM journey?
A: The MSHM program is an intensive one-year program that provides an abundant amount of opportunities for students. This year I have been involved in many activities outside the classroom. Such as my practicum at the Red Cross, participating in the NAHSE and Grant Thornton Case competitions, attending career and networking events, and being an O’Neill International and Diversity Student Ambassador. I also founded the first MSHM Student Association with Ray Martinez and Sarah Puetz!
Q: Where was your practicum experience? What did you learn?
A: At the American Red Cross, I am working on several projects! Such as planning the National Sound the Alarm Event, working with Martindale Brightwood partners to create a community-based Disaster Action Team, planning disability integration strategies in emergency management, and preparing for deployment.
The top skills I use the most at my practicum site are project management, time management, leadership, coaching, and communication skills that I learned during Practicum II by taking the Franklin Covey certifications. I am also starting to enhance my agile skills, which I gained from the agile training workshop this fall! The MSHM program has created unique opportunities for students to stand out from the rest of the world.
Q: Did you feel supported by the MSHM faculty?
A: The program faculty and staff are very supportive inside and outside the classroom. They love to connect with students to give advice and chat about career and future goals! Our Program Director April Grudi & Assistant Director Lyndsey Swan, MS do a phenomenal job in making sure we feel supported; they have built an inclusive environment from the beginning by making sure that we feel welcomed to the program and are in a safe space.
My cohort is like my second family. Coming into the program, my cohort and I were bonding from day 1 of our intensive orientation. Lyndsey and April made sure we all connected to build a foundation of support throughout the program, and I can say that my cohort has helped me every step of the way to get me where I am! They are a great support system and team, and I am so happy I have made lifelong connections and new close friends in my one-year journey in the MSHM program.
