Each year, the Mosaic Initiative at Indiana University invites speakers to talk about topics related to active learning classrooms, often on research and classroom design. This spring, the Mosaic Initiative hosted three webinars highlighting new approaches to researching classroom behavior, new trends in classroom design and faculty support, and faculty’s perspectives on teaching in active learning classrooms.
Our guest speakers for the 2023 webinar series represented higher ed institutions from across the globe.
In today’s blog, I want to share all three webinar recordings with you.
Webinar One
In this first session, Dr. Melinda T. Owens (Assistant Teaching Professor, University of California, San Diego) described the development and application of the machine-learning-derived algorithm Decibel Analysis for Research in Teaching (DART), which can analyze thousands of hours of STEM course audio recordings quickly, with minimal costs, and without need for human observers. Then, Tripp Harris (PhD Student, Indiana University – Bloomington) shared the Mosaic Initiative’s ongoing research into students’ and instructors’ use of learning spaces on Indiana University (IU) campuses, demonstrated our simultaneous use of a ceiling heat map camera, small positioning tags, and audio sensing technology for studying how students and instructors use physical space during formal class meetings.

Webinar Two
In our second webinar, Dr. Aiman Khamitova (Innovative Learning Officer, Nazarbayev University) shared the case about the lecture hall transformation into an active learning classroom at Nazarbayev University in Astana, Kazakhstan. The session focused on two major parts of the case: a classroom redesign followed by faculty training. It also discussed how one classroom transformation led to campus-wide conversations around learning spaces design and usage.

Webinar Three
In our final session, I led a panel of faculty members (Dr. Kalani Craig (IU-Bloomington), Dr. Kevin Jones (IUPUC), Dr. Brian Krohn, (IUPUI), Dr. Miranda Rodak (IU-Bloomington), to discuss how we support faculty teaching in active learning classrooms. The panel addressed questions like: What kind of classrooms do they wish universities designed? What are their Hybrid teaching needs?
