Metaverse, a term coined in the 1992 sci-fi novel Snow Crash, is no longer just a fantasy. Today, tech giants like Google, Microsoft, and Meta (formerly Facebook) are investing in metaverse technologies that aim to create virtual worlds with immersive experiences beyond our physical reality. With the rise of blockchain and non-fungible tokens (NFTs), the outlook for these digital spaces is bright, offering potential for a new frontier of Web 3.0.
However, “with great promise comes great responsibility.” As we navigate these new technologies, we must address concerns around user addiction, security and safety, privacy, digital asset ownership, hate speech, and digital crime. By understanding the potential of the metaverse and blockchain, we can create a better future for all that is equitable, safe, and sustainable.
