My final post! This semester has been so much fun and I think I’ve gained a lot of invaluable experience and knowledge during my time with the Lilly Library. To start off I’d like to say a quick thank you to all of the faculty and staff at the Lilly, but especially to Jody Mitchell (my internship supervisor), Hannah Kish (the digitization assistant), Erika Dowell (the Associate Director & Curator of Modern Books and Manuscripts), and Joel Silver (the Director of the Lilly Library) for being so generous with their time and their willingness to share their knowledge.
This week in my internship we talked about how we go about editing images (especially in Photoshop), and how to use the Aeon Patron system. All patron requests, whether for items that will be used in the reading room or digitization requests, go through Aeon. I also worked on processing some more of the broadsides from the Mendel collection and photographed a book that was full of wanted notices from the 1800s (not sure on the exact date but it looked like they were from the late 1800s or early 1900s)! We also received an ’emergency’ digitization request for photographs of an oversized dictionary (which was fun but unfortunately hollow so not actually readable)! This experience has been so great and has really given me a deeper appreciation for both the materials that make up our collections, and all of the individuals who dedicate themselves to maintaining and sharing those items.
