Undergraduate Validation Exemption Exams
The theory department offers validation/exemption exams (V/E exams) in the core undergraduate music theory courses listed below. These exams are intended for students who come to the Jacobs School of Music already in possession of some substantial knowledge of music theory and mastery of aural skills, usually as a result of having taken comparable courses at other institutions. Graduate Entrance Exams
All new graduate students in the Jacobs School of Music take the Graduate Entrance Examinations (GEEs) in written theory, aural theory, and sight singing, as well as in music history. Please see our information page here.
Doctoral Minor Field Exams
All students pursuing a Doctor of Music or Doctor of Philosophy degree are required to declare one minor field. Please see the graduate office Doctoral Program Minors information here.
