Enjoy studying piano, guitar, or voice in a group context with some of our distinguished faculty. All courses offered online.
Piano
MUS-P 110: Beginning Piano Class 1, Non-Music Majors (3 cr). This is a fun intro to piano that requires no musical experience. Learn about piano styles and how to read and play easy piano music. Taught online in Fall 2020–students must have access to a piano or touch-sensitive keyboard that has at least 61 keys. Instruction has both general concepts introduced in asynchronous lectures, and personalized instruction in live lab classes. Counts for GenEd A&H.
MUS-P 120: Beginning Piano Class 2, Non-Music Majors (3 cr). Second semester level–you need to be able to read and play simple music. We explore playing and listening to piano music in lots of styles, and further develop musicianship and technique. Taught online in Fall 2020–students must have access to a piano or touch-sensitive keyboard that has at least 61 keys. Instruction has both general concepts introduced in asynchronous lectures, and personalized instruction in llive lab classes. Counts for GenEd A&H.
MUS-P130: Beginning Piano Class 3, Non-Music Majors (2 cr). Third semester level. This continues the concepts introduced in the preceding courses, and applies them to study of repertoire, sight reading, and technique. Instruction is online in Fall 2020, with instruction exclusively in small lab sections. Students must have access to a piano or touch-sensitive keyboard that has at least 61 keys.
Guitar
MUS L121: Beginning Guitar Class and Styles (3cr.). This course is as an introduction to popular guitar styles and techniques. Students learn this (1) by building rudimentary guitar playing skills in a classroom lab setting (playing basic open and bar chords in songs, learning how to read tabs and music, and learning basic fingerstyle), and (2) by learning about guitar history/styles and developing critical listening skills through online modules. IUB A&H GenEd credit. No previous experience required.
MUS L122: Intermediate Guitar Class and Styles (3cr.). This course is an expansion on contemporary popular guitar styles and techniques learned in L121, and more in-depth survey on specific styles and guitar performances and advancement on critical listening skills acquired in L121 in a lecture setting. Prerequisites: L121 or L101 and/or ability to read music and play chord structures proficiently. IUB A&H GenEd credit.
Voice
MUS V101: Voice Class (2 cr.). Instruction for beginners in use of the voice, vocal techniques, music reading skills, and artistic presentation.

Ensembles
If you played an instrument or sang in choir in high school and want to continue performing, there are many possibilities. Two highly visible ensembles are the Marching Hundred and the Singing Hoosiers, which are made up primarily of non-music majors and audition the week before classes begin.
No audition is required for the all-campus ensembles that meet one evening per week.

If you want a more intensive option with multiple rehearsal days, you may audition for placement in major-level concert bands, jazz bands, orchestras, the Latin American Ensemble, or a variety of choral ensembles, including Vocal Jazz.
