The Music in General Studies Program is dedicated to providing opportunities to everyone in the IU community. We are committed to developing greater equity, diversity, and inclusivity in our program and have offered diverse courses to the general student for many years. In the past few months, the faculty have worked diligently to incorporate inclusivity in a variety of ways: through representation, expanding repertoire examples, broadening course content, and changing pedagogical approaches. Currently, students have the opportunity to take courses focused on a variety of musical genres and cultures. Several courses count for the World Languages and Cultures credit and many highlight music from a broad array of traditions, such as jazz, Silk Road, blues, film, videogames, as well as more traditional rock history and classical music history and theory. In addition, we offer courses which focus on technology from a creative standpoint that are fundamentally inclusive. Read more about the Jacobs School of Music’s commitment to diversity.
