The Addict’s Wake
“The Addict’s Wake” is a documentary filmed in Nashville chronicling drug addiction in Brown County. Alex Tedrow composed an original score, and the film premiered at the Heartland Film Festival in October, winning the Indiana Spotlight Award.
Afghanistan Refugee Camp
Camp Atterbury, a National Guard training base in Edinburgh, Indiana, housed several thousand Afghan evacuees as part of “Operation All Allies Welcome.” The IU Jacobs School of Music brought several ensembles to perform for the Afghanistan refugees.
Amity Trio
The Amity Trio performed in Indiana in March, building community engagement concerts and activities around their performances. The trio was joined by mezzo-soprano Olga Perez Flora, composer Nur Slim, and IU alum Richard White.
Band Commission with Cait Nishimura
The National Band Association Student Organization commissioned Canadian composer Cait Nishimura; four high schools visited the Bloomington campus in February to celebrate Cait’s new piece, titled “The Nature of Trees.”
Brown County Composition Workshops
IU Jacobs School of Music graduate student Alex Tedrow visited Brown County Middle School to teach a three-day composition workshop to IU alumni Jenna Sear’s 8th grade music and technology class.
Brown County ChamberFest
ChamberFest is a classical chamber music festival based in Brown County. The festival aims to bridge divides in rural Indiana through classical music and education of the highest caliber. The 2022 festival took place in August.
Carnival of the Animals Filming Project
Collaborating with filmmaker Garrett Poortinger, five episodes of The Carnival of the Animals with a voice-over recording by Music Education professor Brent Gault will be soon available to elementary schools in south-central Indiana rural communities.
Classical Connections
Student Organization Classical Connections partnered with Brown County and Paoli schools. Student teachers from IU offered either in-person or virtual private instrument lessons; they also lead sectionals in middle and high school band rehearsals.
Electric Guitar Orchestra
An innovative ensemble consisting of eight electric guitars, a bass guitar, and a drum set, the Electric Guitar Orchestra is led by Guitar faculty Daniel Duarte and performs a vast array of styles in an effort to relate audiences to more types of music.
Kids Compose
A collaboration with elementary school programs in the region, Kids Compose gives young students an opportunity to collaborate with university composition students. After individual workshops with each class, the program culminated in performances at Clear Creek Elementary School.
New Morse Code
New Morse Code is a two person ensemble that had a two week residency on the IU Bloomington campus in the fall. The group visited Salem, collecting sounds for a new composition with the help of the local community.
Organ Project
The Organ Department held a series of performances in a Huntingburg church that houses a beautiful Casavant Organ during the spring semester. These recitals extended into Columbus at the end of the semester and into the summer months.
Musical Time
Musical Time began a series of recitals featuring community-centered programming in Nashville, IN. Performing several recitals at the Brown County Art Guild, the project also spent the summer teaching a course of free community piano lessons.
The Sound of Molecules
Music composition and chemistry dual major Walker Smith, winner of the 2022 IU Jacobs OECD Innovation Competition, held a total of six work-shopped shows in the fall semester.
Shoals Library Project
Shoals, Indiana is one of few locations that has a historic Carnegie library. Three groups from IU Jacobs traveled to Shoals for evenings of performances and post-performance reception mingling.
Twisted Spruce World Ensemble
This international project collects guitar sounds clips, piecing them together into an original composition and set to animation. Nathan Fischer and the CRE replicated the project this year with a focus on engaging with youth in Indiana rural communities.
