Exploring Sound Through Art
When you think about Opera, it’s likely that you imagine a complex plot, elaborate costumes, and a long performance time. But that is not always the case! The Amity Trio, along with composer Nur Slim, and vocalist Dr. Olga Perez Flora have teamed up to create a wonderfully immersive and informative new opera for children: Lucrecia and the Song of the Doubting Dinosaurs! These performances are part of a long-term project beginning this fall and continuing in the spring in Huntingburg and Jasper, Indiana
Lucrecia and the Song of the Doubting Dinosaurs! begins with our main protagonist, T-Rex, discovering that she is actually a vegetarian. It probably goes without saying that this is no small realization for a T-Rex! Will the other dinosaurs ever come to understand her? As we follow T-Rex on her journey, kids in the audience will have several opportunities to be involved with the opera in hands-on moments during the show. You’ll have to come watch a performance to see exactly how it plays out!

Along with their performance of the opera, the Amity Trio will also be performing a world premier of a song cycle for kids by composer Maggie Olivo. Maggie’s work combines poetry, visual art, and music together in an interactive performance for young audiences. During the spring this project will feature an ensemble-composer residency in Indiana where they will be performing in several venues in our communities.
In addition to their performances and work for children, the Amity Trio is also active in the recording studio, and is soon set to release their debut Album “Between us Now.” This will feature the music of Dr. Lauren Bernofsky, Dr. Alice Jones, Dr. Carrie Magin, Amy Beach, Nur Slim, and Florence Prince. The ensemble also performs several times throughout the year and these performances are live streamed on the web.
