The Addict’s Wake
A Story Of Addiction in Brown County
A Film by Glory Girl Productions
About: The Addict’s Wake
“Addiction to meth and opioids is the number one pressing public health issue in our country and small towns experience its effects in dramatic ways. People all over are making the mistake to ‘try it’ with highly addictive substances that create a devastating ripple effect that can unravel families and communities.
Under the picturesque rolling hills, beautiful state parks, and the unique charm of the tourist shops and eateries in Nashville, Indiana, lies terrible disease. This community is a microcosm of what is happening all across rural America. In an effort to reveal the true struggles of these communities, we have banded together to produce ‘The Addict’s Wake’. This documentary examines the deep scars addiction to meth and opioids leave on the user, to be sure, but also on the community as a whole. Many people have met untimely deaths and many are destroying their lives on a daily basis. The meth and heroin hook is set deep here.
In addition, this tight knit community is reeling emotionally and economically with functioning addicts creating dangerous and inefficient work environments. Virtually everyone knows someone battling the issue whether it family or close friend. It is one degree of separation in this community. Children are being cared for by grandparents or great-grandparents because parents are either strung out, checked out or are in jail.
In order to get important interviews and information for this film, we are collaborating with law enforcement, the school system and its superintendent, faith based initiatives, courts and treatment facilities. This documentary is a clarion call to link arms and fight against and reverse the trend of ‘addicted and dying’. The strategic partners in this community are searching for solutions to help people become hopeful in recovery! Recovery is possible and we intend to showcase faces of recovery, along with those whose journey to well-being is just beginning.
This documentary is critically important to build emotional awareness of just how deeply the addiction crisis is hitting broad swaths of America. Brown County is important to the tourist industry in Indiana and the courts, churches, schools, jail, doctors and business owners are coming together at this unique moment to link arms in the battle. Together, they are seeking answers in order to protect their community and rich heritage. We have to continue to examine this issue until the trends and statistics are reversed.
