IUSO Emeritus Professor Publishes Optometry History Book

BLOOMINGTON, IN — IU School of Optometry Emeritus Professor David Goss’s book From Spectacle Making Trade to Scholarly Profession: A History of Optometry in the United States has been published. This is the first comprehensive book on optometry history in the United States published in more than 50 years.

The book documents the long and noble history of optometry. According to its publisher Pacific University Press, the book looks at the long span of optometry history, with a primary focus on the United States. “Along with an overview of the history of optometry from the invention of spectacles to recent years, the book considers the maturation of the optometric examination from simple trial and error of spectacles to today’s comprehensive eye and vision examination; the history of optometric education from the brief instructional programs offered in the late nineteenth century to the challenging academic programs of the present; and the increasing sophistication of optometric publications.”

“The book is intended to give the reader an awareness and appreciation of some of processes and persons responsible for optometry’s advancement from the trade, albeit an important one of spectacle making to its current standing as a strong scholarly profession,” says author Dr. Goss. “It is aimed toward optometrists and optometry students, but others curious about optometry may wish to read about the profession’s proud history.”

Dr. Goss holds a B.A. degree from Illinois Wesleyan University, B.S. and O.D. degrees from Pacific University, and Ph.D. (physiological optics) and M.L.S. degrees from Indiana University. During his career, he taught courses in binocular vision testing procedures and analysis, ocular motility, ocular optics, refractive development, refraction procedures, vision therapy, and vision development. Dr. Goss is the author or co-author of six books. He has served as the editor of Hindsight: Journal of Optometry History since 1995 and was editor of the Indiana Journal of Optometry from 1998 to 2014.

Dr. Rowan Candy named IUSO Interim Dean

The following is an email shared on June 30 with IUSO on the behalf of the Office of the Provost.

Dear IUSO community,

I write with another update on our search for the next dean of the School of Optometry.

As Dean Bonanno returns to the faculty and we move forward in the pivotal search for a new dean, I am pleased to announce Rowan Candy as interim dean of the School of Optometry.

Dr. Candy joined IU in 2000 and has served as associate dean for research from 2007 to 2011 and executive associate dean for academic affairs from 2019 to present. She is part of the Vision Sciences Society and is a fellow of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.

To provide an update on the ongoing dean search, we expect to invite new candidates for first-round interviews in early July.

Thank you for your continued patience and ardent engagement in this search process, and I want to express sincere gratitude to Dr. Candy for offering her leadership until a new dean is named.

Aniseikonia Clinic Launched at IUSO’s Atwater Eye Care Center

IU School of Optometry Clinical Assistant Professor Grace Brasel, OD, FAAO

This year, IU School of Optometry’s Clinical Assistant Professor Grace Brasel, OD, FAAO, launched the Aniseikonia Clinic at the school’s Atwater Eye Care Center. Dr. Brasel, who works in the pediatric and binocular vision department at both the Atwater Eye Care Center and Indianapolis Eye Care Center, is excited to bring this new and unique service to Bloomington, Indiana.

What is aniseikonia?
Aniseikonia is when the images from the two eyes are perceived as being different in size or shape. This can occur due to large differences in spectacle correction between the two eyes or due to retinal disease. Common retinal disorders that can cause aniseikonia are epiretinal membrane (macular pucker), macular edema, vitreomacular traction, and retinal detachment.

Symptoms of aniseikonia
Some individuals with aniseikonia can easily tell that one eye sees images larger or smaller than the other. However, for others, it may not be as clear. Individuals with aniseikonia may also experience symptoms of visual discomfort, headache, reading difficulty, double vision, distorted spatial perception, eyestrain, nausea, and dizziness.

What can I expect during an aniseikonia exam?
At the Atwater Eye Care Center, a very thorough evaluation will be performed assessing binocular vision and refractive error. Special testing is performed to measure image size differences between the eyes, important for the diagnosis of aniseikonia. If diagnosed with aniseikonia, Dr. Brasel will work with you to find the best solution to address your symptoms, whether it be contact lenses or a specialty spectacle lens design.

It is recommended that a comprehensive eye exam has been performed within one year of scheduling an aniseikonia evaluation. The Atwater Eye Care Center offers exams for children and adults of all ages.

Update on IUSO Dean Search

The following is an email on behalf of the Office of the Provost.

Dear IUSO community,

I write with an update on our search for the next Dean of the School of Optometry.

As you know, in April, we hosted campus visits for two finalists for the position, to succeed Dean Bonanno. I greatly appreciate your deep engagement with these candidates during their visits, as well as the thoughtful feedback you provided. Unfortunately, we were not able to seat an incumbent from these candidates.

Following substantive consultation with President Whitten, the search committee, and others, I have decided to extend the search process and pursue additional candidates over the coming weeks.

The dean position will remain posted through at least mid-June, and with the search committee, we are initiating a new round of identifying and recruiting potential candidates. To be clear, this continues to be a fully open search process. I ask all of you to review your professional networks and help nominate and encourage potential applicants to fully consider this opportunity.

Dean Bonanno will continue to serve in the position until returning to the faculty and beginning a year-long sabbatical in July. As our progress indicates, we will consider a potential interim for this position as needed.

I recognize this is a pivotal search for the school, and I want to ensure we have the best possible leader to fulfill our potential at the School of Optometry and across IUB in the years to come.

Finalists Named for IUSO Dean

In January 2023, IU School of Optometry Dean Joseph Bonanno announced that he will step down as dean and return to the faculty. On Friday, April 7, the IU Office of the Provost announced the two finalists for the position are Dr. Jeffery Walline, associate dean for research at Ohio State University, and Dr. Brad Sutton, IUSO clinical professor and service chief of the Indianapolis Eye Care Center. IUSO’s First Two Black Graduates

In 1960, the IU School of Optometry graduated its first two Black graduates of the OD Program—Charles Comer, BS/MS’60, and Clarence Currie, BS/MS’60.

Dr. Charles Comer was the first African American male to graduate from IUSO and to be licensed in the state of Indiana.

After graduation, Dr. Comer pursued a career in the U.S. Air Force and served on bases in Springfield, MA, and Sawyer, MI, examining over 13,000 patients. In 1965, he opened Harbor Health Care Center, which housed his practice Fashion Eyewear Boutique.

Dr. Comer became the first African American optometrist in East Chicago and practiced there for over 44 years. He dedicated much of his time to the advancement of African Americans. Among many other organizations, he was a member of the NAACP, Indiana Black Expo State Board, State Board of Health Black and Minority Health Advisory Committee, Lake County Minority Health Coalition, African Americans United, and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Dr. Comer was also a member of many optometric organizations but had a passion for the National Optometric Association. He served as President, Association Manager, and Meeting Planner. Because of his initiatives and grant writing expertise, the NOA developed many partnerships with corporate sponsors. For his dedication to NOA, he was awarded the NOA Optometrist of the Year Award in 1996.

Dr. Comer will always be remembered for his dedication to the field of optometry and his infallible support of his family and friends. He passed away in 2011.

His classmate, Dr. Clarence Currie, also served in the U.S. Air Force (from 1951 to 1955) and was both a Pharmacy Technician and Staff Sergeant. Dr. Currie attended the U.S. Army Pharmacy School and was a Summer Workshop Scholar at Cambridge University.

From 1983–1999, Dr. Currie served as the Lake County (IN) Court Administrator and Jury Commissioner for the Lake County Superior Courts. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Social Fraternity and of Omega Epsilon Phi National Professional Optometry Fraternity. He was a past president of the Westbrook Community Council and a member and area governor of Toastmasters International.

Dr. Currie actively served his community of Gary, IN. He was a member and two-term president of the Gary Human Relations Council; member and two-term president of the Gary School Board; member of the Gary Parks & Recreation Board; member of the Lake County Tax Adjustment Board; member of the Gary Historical and Cultural Society; member of the Board of Trustees for the Friends of Emerson School for the Performing Arts; and former president of the Board of Trustees for St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Dr. Currie was also a frequent contributor to the Gary Post-Tribune’s “Letters To The Editor,” and briefly acted as a guest columnist for the newspaper. He was also a weekly guest columnist for the Gary INFO Newspaper. Dr. Currie passed away in 2002.

The mission of Gold Key is to recognize optometry students who demonstrate outstanding leadership to their college and profession. Membership to Gold Key is limited to 10% of the graduating class. American Academy of Optometry Recognizes IU Professor for Distinguished Career

Bloomington, IN — Indiana University School of Optometry Distinguished Professor Ann E. Elsner has been named the 2022 Charles F. Prentice Medal Award recipient by the American Academy of Optometry. Each year, the American Academy of Optometry (AAO) recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions and excelled in the profession.

Established in 1958, the Prentice Medal Award is presented annually to a distinguished scientist or clinician scientist in recognition of a career-long record of advancement of knowledge in vision science. The award is considered the most prestigious of the academy’s awards for achievement in research.

“The Academy’s awards represent the very best of us, and it is right and fitting that in our centennial year we take the time to honor and celebrate our award recipients,” said John G. Flanagan, PhD, DSc, FAAO, chair of the awards committee and dean of the Herbert Wertheim School of Optometry & Vision Science at the University of California, Berkeley.

Dr. Elsner’s research focuses on developing retinal imaging and visual function techniques to fight vision loss. Her work has had an impact on research and health care worldwide, including revolutionizing retinal imaging and specialized techniques for presenting visual stimuli. Her research led to the discovery that infrared light can provide a clinically useful image of the retina. She studies a range of retinal pathologies with a focus on diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and normal aging of the eye. Dr. Elsner, who earned her Ph.D. at University of Oregon in 1977, is also the founder and CEO of Aeon Imaging LLC, a Bloomington-based company that provides advanced imaging and image display technology for use in medicine and science.

In 2018, Dr. Elsner received the Edwin H. Land Medal jointly from Optica and the Society for Imaging Science and Technology for her contributions to the fields of ophthalmic instrumentation and vision science with innovative imaging technologies, state-of-the-art psychophysical research, and entrepreneurial ventures. In 2020, IU named her a Distinguished Professor and bestowed her with a Bicentennial Medal for her contributions to the university.

The American Academy of Optometry inspires excellence in optometric practice by fostering research and disseminating knowledge in vision science through its journal, Optometry and Vision Science, and the continuing education presented at its annual meeting. Dr. Elsner will be recognized at a special ceremony during Academy 2022 San Diego, AAO’s annual meeting, which will be held this year from Oct. 25–29, in San Diego.
