WASHINGTON — The Optica Foundation announced Dr. Alessandra Carmichael-Martins, IU School of Optometry post-doctoral fellow in Dr. Stephen Burns’ Lab, is one of 10 exceptional early-career members who will serve as the 2022 class of Optica Ambassadors. Optica identifies an annual class of Ambassadors as part of a program to elevate leaders early in their careers, which makes this more than a designation from the society.
As an Ambassador, Dr. Carmichael-Martins will provide career advice, technical knowledge, and mentorship. She will receive a lifetime Ambassador distinction visible in the member directory for her continuing efforts.
This year’s class will join previous honorees (2016-2021) in their mission to support student chapters and host professional development events. Additionally, they are charged with promoting the importance of a diverse and inclusive science ecosystem and bridging connections between academia and industry.
“The ambassador program empowers those recognized to leverage their passion and drive to make a difference in the optics community,” said Eric Mazur, Harvard University, chair of the Optica Foundation Board of Directors. “Through this program, these individuals will influence and inspire the next generation. Optica Ambassadors help retain more great minds in optics and photonics and support local communities through grassroots activities.”
Originally from Cádiz, Spain, Dr. Carmichael-Martins completed her Ph.D. in Physics from University College Dublin, Ireland, after her M.Sc. at Optics and Photonics at Imperial College London, England. With the mentorship of Dr. Stephen Burns at IU School of Optometry, she is working on advanced imaging techniques of the anterior segment of the living human eye.
