The following IU School of Optometry people won awards and recognitions at the American Academy of Optometry’s 2024 conference in Indianapolis.
Alec Compton and Madison Neale
VSP/AAOF Practice Excellence Scholarship
The scholarship goes to fourth-year students who demonstrate excellence in providing primary eye care to clinical patients and intend to pursue independent optometry practice. Students are nominated by the clinical faculty and subsequently chosen by the Awards and Honors Committee.
Christine Skakun
EssilorLuxottica Eye Care Social Media Influencer for Academy 2024 Indianapolis
The recipient is recognized for creating authentic content, starting educational conversations, and driving engagement around the brand activities and events.
Matthew Keller (Optometric Glaucoma Society), Subashree Murugan (Mike Daley), and Vamsi Parimi (Irvin Borish)
Ezell Fellowships
Ezell Fellowships support graduate students enrolled in a full-time program of study and training in vision-related research, leading to a master’s or PhD degree. Fellowships are for one year; the current amount award is $8,000. Each student also receives two $750 travel grants to attend Academy and ARVO annual meetings.

AAO Student Travel Award
Students are selected primarily for accomplishment and potential in optometric research and education. Academic abilities, including clinical abilities if relevant, are considered.

50-year Fellow Recognition
Recognition from the Academy for 50 years of being a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and his unwavering support and dedication to its mission.
Gabby Cintron
Johnson & Johnson Vision J. Pat Cummings Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded annually to a second- or third-year optometry student at each of the U.S. and Canadian schools and colleges of optometry who best demonstrates the ideal eye care standards of practice. To qualify, the recipient must demonstrate achievement in both academic performance and extra-curricular activities, along with other professional pursuits such as involvement with patients through internships, community service, and other volunteer activities.
