Indiana University School of Optometry Emeritus Clinical Professor Richard E. Meetz, BS’74, OD’76, will receive a Spirit of Philanthropy Award for his contributions and dedication to IUSO. The award was scheduled to be presented to Dr. Meetz on April 21, 2020, at the annual Spirit of Philanthropy Luncheon and Awards Ceremony in Indianapolis, but the ceremony had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A new date has not been set.
The IU School of Optometry is proud to honor Dr. Meetz with the 2020 Spirit of Philanthropy Award. He retired from IUSO after a 41-year career that included 27 years of clinical track classroom education and 24 years of private practice. As chair of the clinical science track, Dr. Meetz oversaw the expansion of clinical training at IUSO which positioned the school as a leader in the field.
Dr. Meetz is internationally recognized for his contributions to the profession of optometry and is the recipient of 12 state, national, and international teaching awards.
He has provided gifts to the School of Optometry that include endowing the Richard Earl Meetz Scholarship. In recognition of his support to IUSO and distinguished career, a clinical teaching laboratory (OPT 101) that has unofficially been referred to as Dr. Meetz’s lab for many years, will officially be named in his honor.
Each year, IUPUI presents the Spirit of Philanthropy Award to individuals, corporations, and foundations that have demonstrated dedication and commitment to the academic and cultural well-being of the campus and its faculty, staff, and students through generous donations, volunteerism, and other notable investments.
