Valerie L. Sharpe, OD’01, returned to the IU School of Optometry to address the Class of 2022 at their White Coat Ceremony on Feb. 29. The ceremony took place in Alumni Hall of the Indiana Memorial Union on the IU Bloomington campus.
Dr. Sharpe serves on the medical staff of Chinle Hospital, an Indian Health Service facility in Arizona which serves the Navajo Nation. Her professional duties include health IT management in the field of clinical informatics. Previously, Dr. Sharpe owned a solo, private practice in Telluride, CO. She has participated in more than 20 international eye care services through her involvement with medical eye care missions in Mexico and Jamaica affiliated with IU’s Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity.
Dr. Sharpe is the recipient of the national Lester Caplan Award for accomplishments in the Public Health Service. She is currently a vice chair on the American Academy of Optometry’s admissions committee and a board member of the American Academy of Optometry Foundation.
After Dr. Sharpe’s keynote address, Indiana Optometric Association’s President Greg Norman, BS’81, OD’82, congratulated the students on behalf of the IOA. Then, the 72 IUSO students were cloaked with their white coats.
