The year 2020 was both the 50th anniversary of the first degree awarded by IUSB’s physics department (50 years!) and the Bicentennial of IU (200 years!). We were planning to celebrate these milestones with a “50/200” Weekend Reunion Event in May of 2020, but it had to be cancelled due to the pandemic.
We’re pleased to announce that the “50/200” Reunion Event has now been rescheduled for the weekend of May 12-14, 2023.
Program
- Friday, May 12
- Evening welcome reception at The Brick, 1145 Northside Blvd, South Bend, with appetizers and cash bar, 5-8 pm
- Astronomical observing (weather permitting)
- Saturday, May 13
- Afternoon departmental “open house” in Northside Hall, basement level
- Noon-4:00p — general mingling and playing with demos and instructional lab equipment
- Noon — kid-friendly demos by SPS members, NS 0063 (continuing through the afternoon in NS 0062)
- 1:00p — brief history of IUSB Physics (by JDH), followed by discussion via Zoom with Steve Shore
- 2:00p — tours of Dr. Levine’s lab and the observatory
- 3:00p — “Life at a National Lab” panel – alums Israel Owens, Andrew Ratkiewicz, Shelly Lesher, and Scott Marley; informal, with plenty of opportunity for contributions from other alumni in the audience about their post-IUSB experiences; NS 0063
- On-campus dinner at The University Grille starting at 5 pm
- Astronomical observing (weather permitting)
- Afternoon departmental “open house” in Northside Hall, basement level
Astronomical observing both Friday and Saturday nights, weather permitting, will be at the IUSB Observatory on the roof of Northside Hall.
We are leaving Sunday, May 14, free of official events, expecting that some of you will want to arrange gatherings with friends from your time at IUSB (or attend the cookout at the Hinnefelds’ house, 2910 Miami St, South Bend, starting at 1pm).
It’s not too late to decide to attend the open house on Saturday afternoon. No registration is required, just come to the basement level of Northside Hall and join the fun!
Hot off the presses — Commencement 2023! — May 9, 2023
Here’s what it looks like inside the observatory when we’re doing spectroscopy…

IUSB physics students have presented at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) on at least three occasions. Here’s a photo of Jerry Hinnefeld, Nana Boateng, and Savan Kharel at NCUR 2008 at Salisbury University in Maryland…
…and a photo at the famous Moosewood Restaurant during NCUR 2011 at Ithaca College, in Ithaca, NY.
Does anyone have photos from NCUR 2006 at UNC Asheville? That was a great one!
